New Melanoma Treatment Might Delay Cancer Progression - Drugs ...

SATURDAY Sept. 29, 2012 -- Researchers say they've discovered a two-drug combination that delays treatment resistance in patients with advanced melanoma.

By targeting different points in the same growth-factor pathway, the kinase inhibitor drugs dabrafenib and trametinib postponed the development of drug resistance in patients with BRAF-positive metastatic melanoma, the study authors said.

Melanoma is the most serious, and often deadly, form of skin cancer. In about half of patients with melanoma that has spread, tumor growth is caused by genetic mutations that keep the BRAF protein -- part of the MAPK cell growth pathway -- constantly activated. Drugs that inhibit BRAF activity can rapidly stop and reverse tumor growth in about 90 percent of patients. But the response is temporary in most cases, and tumor growth resumes in six or seven months, the researchers explained.

Previous research suggested that this drug resistance develops because the MAPK pathway gets turned back on through activation of MEK, another protein that is part off the MAPK pathway.

"We investigated this (drug) combination because of research we and others have conducted into the molecular underpinnings of resistance to BRAF inhibitor therapy," study lead author Dr. Keith Flaherty, of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, said in a hospital news release.

The phase 1 and 2 study was sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, which developed both drugs.

"We found that adding the MEK inhibitor trametinib to BRAF inhibitor dabrafenib clearly delays the emergence of resistance. In fact, the combination was at least twice as effective as BRAF inhibition alone," he said.

One expert agreed that the results were encouraging.

"This study addresses the problem of resistance to the mitogen-activated protein kinase [MAPK] pathway. This study combined dabrafenib [a selective BRAF inhibitor] and trametinib, [a selective MAPK kinase (MEK) inhibitor]. These drugs can be safely combined, and the survival was significantly improved without untoward side effects," said Dr. Michele Green, a dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

The study was conducted at 14 sites in the United States and Australia and included 162 patients who received different dose combinations of the drugs: two daily 150 milligram (mg) doses of dabrafenib plus one 2 mg dose of trametinib; the same dabrafenib dose with a 1 mg dose of trametinib; or treatment with dabrafenib alone.

Patients who received dabrafenib alone were able to receive the full-dose combination treatment if their cancer resumed progression.

Treatment with both combinations of dabrafenib and trametinib led to a four-month longer delay in drug resistance than treatment with dabrafenib alone. After one year of treatment, 41 percent of patients receiving the full-dose combination treatment had no progression of their melanoma, compared with 9 percent of those receiving dabrafenib alone.

Among patients receiving the combination treatment, the development of side effects such as skin rash and a less dangerous type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma was similar to that typically seen in patients taking only one of the drugs.

The study was scheduled for presentation Saturday at the European Society for Medical Oncology meeting in Vienna and simultaneous publication in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The drug combination is now being tested in a larger phase 3 study, which is required for U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.

Do Women's Periods Really Sync Up? | Greatist

Any woman can relate, and any man within eyeshot has probably witnessed the following scenario: A woman suffering from mind-numbing cramps, hobbling over to the closest female coworker?s desk for pharmaceutical relief, and bonding over their synced cycles. If women spend enough time around female friends or co-workers, they?re bound to get on the same schedule? right? Greatist examines the science behind the sync.

Sync Up or Sex Up ? The Need-to-Know

In 1971, a study speculated that regular contact with other women could affect female?s menstrual cycles. Researchers found social interaction was key to matched cycles, and close friends and women who were in contact for a substantial portion of every day (say, hanging out or working together) were more likely to sync up than women who merely lived in proximity to each other (e.g., on the same floor of a dorm)[][]. Follow-up studies suggested pheromones were responsible and that ?menstrual synchrony? (the technical term for syncing) might be just the tip of the iceberg: It?s possible periods and ovulation could be socially regulated throughout a woman?s lifespan, from puberty to pregnancy and everywhere in between[][].

But while many researchers uphold the syncing theory, boy has there been a backlash. The pro-syncing crowd has been criticized for poor research methods, and the existence of natural synchrony hasn?t been confirmed in non-human primate studies[][][][][].

In fact, synced cycles might not make sense evolutionarily. Syncing up in a hunter-gatherer tribe, for example, would mean that for a week or so, no woman would be able to get pregnant ? not ideal when you?re responsible for procreating the human race[]. Instead of having matched cycles, women might unknowingly sync up phases of ?sexual receptivity? and the lack thereof ? meaning one woman is ready to get pregnant while another is just starting to menstruate, giving fertile women a more diverse choice of mates[]. (Of course, these are all very biological arguments, operating on the presumption that every woman?s goal in life is to get pregnant.)

Menstrual Mystery ? The Answer/Debate

Unfortunately, there isn?t a definitive answer to the science of syncing, says Frederick Naftolin, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Reproductive Biology Research at NYU. Synchronization is possible ? in non-human animals, anyway. Manually matching up cycles (typically with the hormone progesterone) is key to many agricultural areas that rely on artificial insemination of cows, goats, and buffalos, as synchrony allows for simultaneous impregnation of a herd[]. But evidence for naturally-occurring human synchrony hasn?t been confirmed via adequately controlled, randomized trials.

Still, some researchers strongly maintain?menstrual synchrony is real[][]. Anecdotal evidence certainly seems to support the idea of syncing, says Martha Thomas, Associate Residency Program Director in the OB/GYN department at York Hospital/Wellspan Health. And it?s hard to say how factors like stress, sexual partners, and birth control play into the syncing game ? if synchrony does exist, it?s possible these factors override it, making matched cycles appear less common than they might actually be[].

But this is mostly speculation, stresses Thomas. Most contemporary research holds that it?s unlikely women will actually sync up month after month after month, especially because the length of individuals? cycles can vary so dramatically[]. What seems most likely is that women don?t actually synchronize, but rather have the occasional synced period when their cycles? lengths randomly overlap.

Surprised? Us too. But we?ll still share the Midol, whether or not we?re suffering too.

Thanks to Dr. Frederick Naftolin and Dr. L. Martha Ann Thomas for their help with this article.

Vatican paper weighs on 'Jesus' Wife' scrap: fake

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican newspaper has added to the doubts surrounding Harvard University's claim that a 4th century Coptic papyrus fragment showed that some early Christians believed that Jesus was married, declaring it a "fake."

The newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, published an article Thursday by leading Coptic scholar Alberto Camplani and an accompanying editorial by the newspaper's editor, Giovanni Maria Vian, an expert in early Christianity. They both cited concerns expressed by other scholars about the fragment's authenticity and the fact that it was purchased on the market without a known archaeological provenance.

"At any rate, a fake," Vian entitled his editorial, which criticized Harvard for creating a "clamorous" media frenzy over the fragment by handing the scoop to two U.S. newspapers only to see "specialists immediately question it."

Karen King, a professor of early Christianity at Harvard Divinity School, announced the finding last week at an international congress on Coptic studies in Rome. The text, written in Coptic and probably translated from a 2nd century Greek text, contains a dialogue in which Jesus refers to "my wife," whom he identifies as Mary.

The issue has had resonance since Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was unmarried, and any evidence to the contrary would fuel current debates about celibacy for priests and the role of women in the church.

As such, it's not surprising that the Vatican would challenge the claim.

King has said the fragment doesn't prove Jesus was married, only that some early Christians thought he was. She has acknowledged the doubts raised by her colleagues and says the fragment's ink will be tested to help determine when it was written.

Some scholars attending the conference questioned the authenticity of the fragment, noting its form and grammar looked unconvincing and suspicious. Others said it was impossible to deduce the meaning of it given the fragmented nature of the script.

Camplani, a professor at Rome's La Sapienza university who helped organize the conference, cited those concerns and added his own, specifically over King's interpretation of the text ? assuming it is real.

Rather than taking the reference to a wife literally, he wrote, scholars routinely take such references in primitive Christian and biblical literature metaphorically, to symbolize the spiritual union between Jesus and his disciples.

The absence of any reference to Jesus being married in historic documents "seems more significant than the literal interpretation of a few expressions from the new text, which by my reading should be understood purely in a symbolic sense," he wrote.

Camplani nevertheless praised King's academic paper on the subject as scientific and objective.

In its announcement about the discovery, Harvard said the paper would be published in January in the Harvard Theological Review, a peer-reviewed journal. The journal later said it hadn't committed to publication and would await testing on the fragment's ink to help determine its authenticity.

Breakthrough on immune system and brain tumors

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? In what could be a breakthrough in the treatment of deadly brain tumors, a team of researchers from Barrow Neurological Institute and Arizona State University has discovered that the immune system reacts differently to different types of brain tissue, shedding light on why cancerous brain tumors are so difficult to treat.

The large, two-part study, led by Barrow research fellow Sergiy Kushchayev, MD under the guidance of Dr. Mark Preul, Director of Neurosurgery Research, was published in the Sept. 14 issue of Cancer Management and Research. The study explores the effects of immunotherapy on malignant gliomas, cancerous brain tumors that typically have a poor prognosis.

What the researchers discovered was that immune cells of the brain and of the blood exhibit massive rearrangements when interacting with a malignant glioma under treatment. Essentially, the study demonstrates that the complex immune system reacts differently in different brain tissues and different regions of the brain, including tumors.

"This is the first time that researchers have conducted a regional tissue study of the brain and a malignant glioma to show that these immune cells do not aggregate or behave in the same way in their respective areas of the brain," says Dr. Preul. "This means that effective treatment in one area of the brain may not be effective in another area. In fact, it could even cause other regions of the tumor to become worse."

The results of the study provide important insight into why clinical trials involving immunotherapies on glioma patients may not be working.

Animals suspected in spread of new virus

(AP) ? Britain's Health Protection Agency has published an early genetic sequence of the new respiratory virus related to SARS that shows it is most closely linked to bat viruses, and scientists say camels, sheep or goats might end up being implicated too.

So far, officials have only identified two confirmed cases and say the virus isn't as infectious as SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, which killed hundreds of people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 global outbreak.

In Geneva, World Health Organization spokesman Glenn Thomas told reporters Friday that so far the signs are that the virus is "not easily transmitted from person to person" ? but analyses are ongoing. The agency said it's too early to tell how big a threat the new virus will be since it is unknown how exactly it spreads and whether it will evolve into a more dangerous form.

Global health officials suspect two victims from the Middle East may have caught it from animals.

"It's a logical possibility to consider any animals present in the region in large numbers," said Ralph Baric, a coronavirus expert at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Biologists now need to go into the area and take samples from any animals they can get their hands on, including camels and goats," he said. Baric said it was crucial to find out how widespread the virus is in animals and what kind of contact might be risky for people.

Baric suggested bats might be spreading the virus directly to humans since the two confirmed infections happened months apart. "If there was an established transmission pattern from other animals, we probably would have seen a lot more cases," he said.

WHO said it is considering the possibility the new coronavirus sickened humans after direct contact with animals. The agency is now working with experts in the Middle East to figure out how the two confirmed cases got infected but could not share details until the investigation was finished.

One patient was a Saudi Arabian man who died several months ago while the other is a Qatari national who traveled to Saudi Arabia before falling ill and is currently in critical but stable condition in a London hospital.

Earlier this week, WHO issued a global alert asking doctors to be on guard for any potential cases of the new respiratory virus, which also causes kidney failure.

Saudi officials have already warned that next month's annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage, which brings millions to Saudi Arabia from all around the world, could allow the virus to spread. As a precautionary measure, they are advising pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.

Experts said knowing where a virus comes from provides clues on how to stop it.

"This means we could prevent the fire before it starts instead of rushing towards it with fire trucks and water hoses afterwards," said Michael Osterholm, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Minnesota.

Osterholm said it was possible bats had simply passed on the virus from other animals and that there could be a complicated transmission chain that ultimately ended in humans.

Viruses reproduce as they infect animals and people, giving them more chances to evolve into a deadlier version.

"We don't know enough about coronaviruses to predict which mutations might make them more lethal or transmissible," Osterholm said. "But you don't want to tempt genetic fate with microbes because you're bound to lose most times."

Getting Exposure for Your Home-Based Business | Business 2 ...

Starting a business from home can be tough. Even after you?ve figured out how things are going to run, you have to deal with any hiccups that happen, and trust me; hiccups will happen. You also have to wade into the wonderful world of marketing, which can be really difficult to navigate without the right tools. Here are some tips on how to get exposure for your at-home business

Events

Even if your business is based online, you can use your local community as a great resource. People want to support local businesses even if they do business in other regions as well.

You can get booths at local carnivals, fairs, business and job fairs, farmer?s markets, and many other big local events. Think of anywhere you have seen businesses networking and trying to get customers, and follow suit.

Contact event coordinators to see about getting represented. Some events may charge you. Events put on by not-for-profits or city organizations such as libraries probably won?t unless it?s for charity.

When it comes to event time, make sure you have a nice display with business cards and other freebies to hand out to people. Be friendly and engaging so that they?re more likely to remember you.

Start an email list for people to get more information, but don?t be surprised if a lot of people unsubscribe. Email inboxes are becoming a catch-all for advertisements that never get read.

Local Partners

Many businesses put out newsletters of local partners. You might have to pay to be included, but you might not. Some businesses might keep your business cards on display in exchange for the same. You can also offer services to local businesses. They want to network just as much as you do, so you may be able to build some mutually beneficial relationships. Never give up an opportunity to meet people and talk up your business.

Strong Online Presence

If you are holed up in your house all day, perhaps the most accessible and affordable marketing you can do is online. It is essential for almost any business wanting to be successful today to have a strong online presence. There are many ways to establish and maintain one.

Of course, the best way to start building your professional online presence is to build your website. This will be the foundation of your online presence. Once your business has a website, you can link back to it in directories, from social media profiles, and put it on promotion materials.

Be sure that your website is easily navigated. If people can?t find anything, they will get frustrated and leave. Make sure that outbound links open a new window or tab, not lead away from your page.

The information on your website needs to be clear, concise, and useful. Make sure you have hours, product information, deals, and updates on your site. This should be an easy place for people to find information about your company.

It is important to have consistent updates to your website. This could be difficult if your hours and products are static, so it is a good idea to start a blog. Write about recent news updates and innovations in your field. Keep your posts relevant and professional and make sure that they will be interesting to potential clients. Post on a regular basis. If you have trouble finding time, write a bunch of posts at once and then queue the posts so that you can have consistent updates.

In order to get traffic to your website, you need to show up in the search engines. The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) industry is booming, so there are a lot of companies out there that you can go to in order to get help with promoting your website. If you cannot afford an SEO company however, you can get a good start on your own if you are informed. Find a reliable SEO blog?to learn about the latest practices and relevant news to the SEO field.

There are a lot of ways to gain exposure for your home-based business. The important thing is to do your research and put the same quality and effort into your behind-the-scene tasks as you give to your clients. This consistency will help you build a stronger business as well as a reputation for a great work ethic.

Best Search Engine Optimization Company - Internet Marketing Guide

Best Search Engine Optimization Company

Finding the best search engine optimisation company is a challenge simply because many of such companies claim to be the best. In the UK, there are literally hundreds of SEO companies. They would offer an evaluation of the existing website. They would provide technical advice about hosting websites. And they would conduct SEO training. But from the point of view of online entrepreneurs, there is only one measure to look at. And that measure is expressed in one little word: results. But is it really important to hire such a company?

Search engine optimisation or SEO is a crucial aspect of any online business. The simplest way to describe SEO is that it is a marketing strategy. But the medium is radically different from those of conventional strategies, in which paper flyers or TV ads are used within a brick-and-mortar world. With SEO, the world is the Internet and the strategies must operate within the electronically fuelled structure of search engines. For example, a conventional marketing strategy would be to use a strategically located billboard. On the other hand, the SEO would aim for a high search engine ranking.

The task of making the online company rank high in the search engines can be daunting for an entrepreneur who only has a great business idea but not familiar with the technicalities of cyberspace. Fortunately, choosing the best search engine optimisation company is not rocket science. After all, the entrepreneur?s goal is simple, which is to get a company that can produce good results. All that is needed is a little investigation of several SEO companies.

The first area to investigate is the list of search engines that the SEO Company has been successful with. If a company claims to have made an online business rank high in a search engine, the entrepreneur should ask: which search engine? According to the prestigious research group, Nielsen, the most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo MSN, AOL, and Ask. Other search engines that are not found here are being utilized by less than the share of Ask.com. The best SEO companies are those that can produce high rankings, not just in one search engine but also in the top three search engines.

Another area to investigate is about the use of key phrases. The key phrases can be considered as the bloodline of search engine rankings. An excellent search engine optimisation company should have the ability to make key phrases rank high. However, the entrepreneur must ask the specific key phrases that have been positioned highly through the efforts of the SEO Company. If the high-ranking key phrase is as questionable as ?cat silky wear,? then the claimed results of the company has no substance. The key phrases should be terms that are actually used by web surfers.

Going viral to kill zits

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Watch out, acne. Doctors soon may have a new weapon against zits: a harmless virus living on our skin that naturally seeks out and kills the bacteria that cause pimples.

The Sept. 25 online edition of the American Society for Microbiology's mBio publishes the findings by scientists at UCLA and the University of Pittsburgh.

"Acne affects millions of people, yet we have few treatments that are both safe and effective," said principal investigator Dr. Robert Modlin, chief of dermatology and professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "Harnessing a virus that naturally preys on the bacteria that causes pimples could offer a promising new tool against the physical and emotional scars of severe acne."

The scientists looked at two little microbes that share a big name: Propionibacterium acnes, a bacterium thriving in our pores that can trigger acne; and P. acnes phages, a family of viruses that live on human skin. The viruses are harmless to humans, but programmed to infect and kill the aforementioned P. acnes bacteria.

When P. acnes bacteria aggravate the immune system, it causes the swollen, red bumps associated with acne. Most effective treatments work by reducing the number of P. acnes bacteria on the skin.

"We know that sex hormones, facial oil and the immune system play a role in causing acne, however, a lot of research implicates P. acnes as an important trigger," explained first author Laura Marinelli, a UCLA postdoctoral researcher in Modlin's laboratory. "Sometimes they set off an inflammatory response that contributes to the development of acne."

Using over-the-counter pore cleansing strips from the drugstore, the researchers lifted acne bacteria and the P. acnes viruses from the noses of both pimply and clear-skinned volunteers.

When the team sequenced the bacteriophages' genomes, they discovered that the viruses possess multiple features ? such as small size, limited diversity and the broad ability to kill their hosts ? that make them ideal candidates for the development of a new anti-acne therapy.

"Our findings provide valuable insights into acne and the bacterium that causes it," observed corresponding author Graham Hatfull, Eberly Family Professor of Biotechnology, professor of biological sciences at the University of Pittsburgh and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute researcher. "The lack of genetic diversity among the phages that attack the acne bacterium implies that viral-based strategies may help control this distressing skin disorder."

"Phages are programmed to target and kill specific bacteria, so P. acnes phages will attack only P. acnes bacteria, but not others like E. coli," added Marinelli. "This trait suggests that they offer strong potential for targeted therapeutic use."

Acne affects nearly 90 percent of Americans at some point in their lives, yet scientists know little about what causes the disorder and have made narrow progress in developing new strategies for treating it. Dermatologists' arsenal of anti-acne tools -- benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics and Accutane ? hasn't expanded in decades.

"Antibiotics such as tetracycline are so widely used that many acne strains have developed resistance, and drugs like Accutane, while effective, can produce risky side effects, limiting their use," explained coauthor Dr. Jenny Kim, director of the UCLA Clinic for Acne, Rosacea and Aesthetics. "Acne can dramatically disfigure people and undermine their self-esteem, especially in teens. We can change patients' lives with treatment. It's time we identified a new way to safely treat the common disorder."

The research team plans to isolate the active protein from the P. acnes virus and test whether it is as effective as the whole virus in killing acne bacteria. If laboratory testing proves successful, the researchers will study the compound's safety and effectiveness in combating acne in people.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Institute At USC The State Of Entertainment ...

This story comes courtesy of Neon Tommy.

By Maria Jose Plascencia

"Film and television are more powerful than politicians could ever be," former governor of California and actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, said at the University of Southern California Monday.

The entertainment panel moderated by Ben Smith, the editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed was comprised of Ron Meyer, president of Universal Studios, Brian Grazer, chairman of Imagine Entertainment, Jimmy Lovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, Rob Friedman co-chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, as well as Schwarzenegger himself.

Besides touching on the impact Hollywood has on politics, the panel also spoke about how technological advances and the birth of social media has affected their various industries.

"We went from $36 billion to 18 billion, we realize we will never get back up to that sum by selling one song at a time on iTunes" Lovine said on the music industry in relationship to piracy and social media.

He went on to explain how important it is for these industries to be strategic by favoring certain platforms of communication, and building their own.

"We would favor a company. What if we take all the music videos off YouTube? There would be a lot of angry viewers," Lovine explained.

However, for the movie industry, these improvements in the media can bring marketing and communication advantages.

The panelists agreed piracy is the biggest issue faced because content is easier to steal than to protect. One of the key points of discussion was the importance of finding solutions that are able to adapt to these advances in media.

"New technology is always starved from content, we need to work together," Friedman said.

As for the relationship between Hollywood and its influence on society and politics, all panelists agreed that its impact is critical.

"Film and television can expand people's mind," Grazer said. He gave examples of his own work, such as how "8 Mile" tackled the idea of hip-hop as a subculture but ultimately proved it to be its own culture

"Hip-hop brought together kids of all cultures to do something bigger than to listen to music," Lovine said.

Meyer explained how the The Lorax was very commercial but also provided a good message about being environmentally friendly.

"An Inconvenient Truth is screaming for a sequel," added Governor Schwarzenegger.

The panel painted the relationship between Hollywood and society by giving insight and providing examples drawn from their own work.

In regards to Schwarzenegger's identity as both a movie star and politician, the panelists agreed that his name is not only recognizable from his movies, but also for his character and personality.

"The movie industry helped me run for governor," he agreed.

With the first symposium of the Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy, the Sol Price School of Public Policy seems like a promising place for ideas from different industries to flourish.

Japan auto makers to slow production in China amid darkened outlook

BEIJING (Reuters) - Japanese automakers including Toyota Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Co. are cutting back production in China in the wake of anti-Japan protests that shuttered dealerships and darkened their sales outlook in the world's biggest car market.

Production slowdowns are a normal feature of the auto industry in mature markets like the United States and Japan, where they are used to keep inventories from ballooning and avoid pressure for automakers to offer deep discounts that erode profitability.

But the steps by the Japanese automakers to cut output in China are an anomaly in a market that has driven the industry's global growth over the past decade and where most automakers had been adding capacity until China's economic slowdown in recent months. That caused production to outpace sales, resulting in larger-than-normal inventory levels at many car dealers.

"For the time being I think you're going to see Japanese automakers' sales in China down by 20 to 30 percent," said Koji Endo, auto analyst at Advanced Research Japan.

"The last time we had protests like this in 2010, the effects only lasted about a month, but I think this time is going to be different. This is going to have a serious impact."

EXTENDED HOLIDAY SHUTDOWNS

Nissan, Japan's top automaker in China, said it would halt production at a joint venture in China starting on Thursday, three days earlier than planned, and extending through next week's national holiday period.

Toyota plants in Tianjin and Guangzhou will also suspend production from Wednesday through the holiday, Tokyo-based spokeswoman Shino Yamada said, a few days earlier than planned. Production at factories in China may be further curtailed depending on market conditions, she said.

As a result, a senior Toyota executive in Beijing said the company probably won't be able to meet its goal of selling one million cars in China this year. In 2011, Toyota with its local Chinese partners sold about 900,000 cars in the country.

"It's very difficult to sell cars right now, but that's true with every Japanese brand. Not just us," said the executive, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

In addition to Toyota and Nissan, Mazda Motor Corp. has decided to halt production in China on Friday and Saturday, giving workers two extra days off as part of the national holiday production shutdown.

Suzuki Motor Corp. said it also had stopped one of two shifts that it normally runs in China.

LINGERING RESENTMENT

Anti-Japan sentiment in China escalated earlier this month after Japan said it would buy a group of disputed island in the East China Sea, called Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan, from a private owner. It sparked the latest flare-up in tensions between the Asian neighbors that has smoldered since the end of the World War Two.

In protests across China, angry demonstrators vandalized properties of Japanese companies, including a Toyota outlet in the eastern city of Qingdao that was torched.

A senior Beijing-based Toyota sales executive said the long-term impact of the dispute on Japanese brands was uncertain.

"Unlike before, when sales recovered fairly quickly, things seem very different this time," he said. "But it's still very difficult to gauge what kind of long-term fallout we are going to have."

The executive, involved with sales and marketing of Toyota's Lexus brand in China, said all Lexus outlets in China had reopened and are operating normally.

"But customers are expressing fears about owning Japanese-branded cars," he said, "and that worries me a bit."

The latest auto production adjustments come on top of general cutbacks Japanese auto makers had been making prior to the protests. Global auto makers in general have been coping with slower-than-anticipated auto sales in China this year.

China's economy grew at its slowest pace in more than three years in the second quarter. A factory survey in August showed China's manufacturing sector contracted at its sharpest pace in nine months.

In the auto sector, Japanese auto makers had a roughly 19 percent combined share of China's passenger car market in August before the protests. That was down from 20 percent in July, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Bin Wang said his checks with Japanese auto dealers in Guangdong province since the protests showed that sales were down on average by 60 percent, adding that the slowdown had boosted sales for German, American and Korean brands.

Endo, at Advanced Research Japan, said he expected Japanese automakers would continue to adjust production if sales remain weak and could take measures such as cutting shifts or slowing line speeds to keep inventory from building.

As a result, he said, parts suppliers in both China and Japan would have to cut output as well.

Internet Marketing Can Boost the Income of Any Business

September 25, 2012.?Paul Hixon

The internet is now bigger than ever, with more and more people from around the world getting online every day. It is home to millions of websites of many different varieties, giving people the chance to learn, play and communicate.

However, many businesses haven?t been quick enough to take advantage of the internet to further their interests. Internet marketing allows companies to reach more customers than ever before in an efficient and cost-effective way.

Web-based marketing covers a broad range of internet based business activity. Generally speaking, it refers to the use of the internet to advertise services and products for sale. It involves communication with existing customers and potential customers. There has never been a quicker and more effective way to communicate with millions of people in such a short space of time.

Perhaps the most basic form of marketing is direct advertising. This involves companies paying for advertising space on third party websites. Banner ads are placed strategically on a web page and the advertiser can either pay a fixed charge, a charge for every time the page is viewed or a charge for every time the banner ad is clicked. There are several services that make this process easy by offering automated services to companies.

Many companies are now taking advantage of the relatively recent boom in social media. People keep in touch with friends and loved ones through the use of such software. However, business is now using the same software to keep in touch with its customers. Latest products, services and special offers can be relayed to millions of customers with one single message.

Social media also grows the customer base of a company naturally. When people interact with a company, friends of that person can see this interaction and may be persuaded to find out more. This is often referred to as viral marketing and is a very efficient way of getting a message across.

Email marketing has been popular for some time now and is a very quick and cost-effective way of sending customers details of new products and services. Email addresses are collected by a business, then used to communicate news. One message is usually written, then can be sent to an infinite number of addresses with the single click of a mouse. Many companies specialize in such services and can also provide email addresses of people that fall within the customer profile of a company.

A large part of selling a business on the world wide web is SEO or Search Engine Optimization. This allows the text of a website to speak for itself. Internet search engines often collate search results by looking for keywords or phrases stored within sites. If a company can successfully integrate these phrases in its web text, they are more likely to be shown within the first two pages of search engine results pages.

Internet marketing is considered to be a specialized service and many companies opt for help from specialists. SEO in particular can be a very complex issue. Key words and phrases need to be analyzed and finding the right ones for a particular business can be tricky. Integrating key phrases without jeopardizing the quality of the text can also be a little tricky, so businesses often contract this work out to professionals.

LearnmoreMN Blog: Mismeasuring college

By Steve Kelley, September guest blogger

Holding higher education accountable is a hot topic. The Obama administration has announced several programs, including the higher education version of Race to the Top, that call for colleges and universities to demonstrate positive outcomes, measured mostly by student retention and graduation rates. This month the University of Minnesota?s President Eric Kaler proposed to the Board of Regents that the University?s 2013 legislative funding request include a performance incentive pool with 5-year graduation rates as one of the criteria.

It is not surprising that the accountability wave that has submerged K-12 education is sloshing over higher education too. Tuition costs have continued to rise, including the cost of an education at a public institution. Legislators have cut back on higher education as they face ever increasing health care costs. The costs of college have revived the debate about the value of a college education. Economic data continue to show a high return on investment, with recent information from the Great Recession suggesting that college-educated workers came through the recession in better shape than those with only a high school diploma. It makes a kind of sense, then, that our notion of performance in higher education would be to measure completion rates and time to degree. Getting students graduated is what appears to add value.

In the face of these demands for measurable performance, it is essential to ask whether we are measuring the right things. Retention and prompt graduation do make a difference for students so they are not bad measures. Yet these criteria have little to say about the quality of the education being delivered or whether students are being taught the right things. As has happened in K-12 education, measuring performance has distracted us from a debate about what we want as a society from higher education and whether students are getting what they need. We lack clarity about what a good higher education is, so we fall back to measuring whether a student received a fast education.

A recent New York Times story about the Thiel fellows who forgo or drop out of college to pursue a dream project put a laser focus on the question of what higher education should do. Peter Thiel is a successful high tech entrepreneur who offers financial support to students who don?t go to college. The implicit message is that college is not a means of making a difference or solving a meaningful problem; it is a barrier to success. I am looking for the accountability project that would enable a college or university to say to Thiel candidates: we are the springboard to pursuing your dreams, not the hurdle, no matter how long it takes.

Let?s start a debate about how higher education gets better at preparing students to make a difference now, whether it is in the community, starting their own enterprise or through an employer. If we could have a meaningful debate about what we mean by a good higher education, then maybe we could figure out what we really want to measure.

Important Information To Consider Regarding Home Improvement ...

If you are doing a total renovation of a room, work from the top down. If you start at the top and work downwards, falling debris and paint drips will not end up on a freshly renovated floor, but on a surface that you plan to remove anyway. This saves you significantly on time and effort.

If the outside of your home is looking a bit drab and old, why not put new outside light fixtures up. There are a lot of outside light fixtures available on the market and they all have something special. Putting a new light on your home adds a touch of class, elegance and style.

When painting your home, it is important to do it on a day when it is not raining. The moisture in the air could cause the paint to take longer to dry. This means that there is more of a chance that the paint will become damaged. It is best to wait to paint until two days past rain.

There?s no need for a full bathroom remodel when you can make your bathroom more functional and stylish by installing new fixtures. Update the shower with a more adjustable shower head or there are even models that mimic rainfall! New sink faucets, towel racks, cabinet hardware or mirrors are other effective choices. Change out your fixtures and you will update your style with out breaking your budget.

If someone in your household has long hair or you bathe shedding pets often, use a hair trap in the shower to prevent annoying clogs in the drain. There are a variety of models to fit different drain styles, but they all work by preventing hair from entering the drain and getting stuck in the trap.

Before you start painting a room, it is best to know about how much paint you need. Measure the length of the walls in the room you plan to paint and add them together. Next, measure the height of the room. Multiply the height by the length. The square foot of the room is the answer you get. One gallon of paint will generally cover 350 square feet.

Always take your time. Unless it?s an emergency, like a leaky roof or flooded basement, plan ahead of a project at least three months out. Invest more time in order to save money by shopping around. Research what needs to be done and what materials are recommended so you have a plan and a shopping list once you are ready to begin.

If your patio is looking a little old, why not try laying a new flooring on over your patio. Cement patios do not give off a sense of beauty or home. If you add new flooring to your patio, you can create an entirely different feeling in your outdoor living environment.

When you are looking to lower your utility bills, an easy way to improve your home and save money is to check your home for leaky faucets and pipes. This way you can prevent the waste of water just dripping down your sinks and lower your costs over the span of the year.

If you are doing work near a kitchen, fireplace, or gas appliance, make sure you know where the gas shutoff for your home is located. If there were to be an accident, and gas started leaking into your home, the smallest spark could set it off. If you know in advance where the shutoff is, you can respond faster to the issue before it becomes an emergency.

If you have a large garden but would like more indoor living space, adding a conservatory is one home improvement you should consider. A conservatory will provide an additional room to your house that will be filled with natural light. The room can be used for moonlit dinners, home gym equipment, sun lounges and much more. The structure is also likely to catch the eye of potential buyers and increase the resale value of your home.

As you can see, home improvement can be very easy. With the tips above, you can accomplish the task of turning your home into your private sanctuary, a place you are proud to call home. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and start that home improvement project you?ve been thinking about.

Motorola RAZR i: hands-on with the 2GHz Android phone (video)

Motorola RAZR i handson with the 2GHz Android ICS smartphone

While we've seen similar things from the RAZR M already -- and even reviewed it -- we reckoned those 2GHz Intel internals and HSPA-only radio inside the RAZR i (as well as European availability) warranted another tour of the hardware. In summary, there's decently bright, if a little jaggy, 4.3-inch AMOLED screen, with a water resistant coating covering the already hardy Kevlar backing. There's space for microSD expansion, and thanks to that tiny bezel, it's a phone that very happily resided in the palm of our hand. Some Intel assistance has added a new 10-frame burst mode, and also sped up the boot-time of the camera app itself. We're booting up our benchmark toolkit to assess how Intel's processor fares, but until the final scores are revealed, take a look at our hands-on video after the break.

Update: We've added our initial benchmarks -- check them here.

The future for Internet Marketing El Paso TX - AGI Marketing Solutions

It?s not just about where you can sell stuff to people right now, but next month, next year, 5, 10 or more out. That?s why I think the concept of discover, consume and engage is so important, because it transcends ideas like ?social network? or ?search engine? and focuses more on consumers and technologies. Will we be using a search engine like Google in 5 years? Will we be using desktop computers in 5 years? What will future social networks look like? Answers to those questions are answers to the future of internet marketing and customer engagement.

Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon and plenty of other large companies are innovating at amazing speed to gain control of our attention. Some are doing it through devices, some through content, others through infrastructure. A handful of companies have had a huge impact on what we do online and at the same time, new companies, start-ups and individuals are creating amazing solutions. What are you doing to see the bigger picture and what it means for your business and internet marketing?

Rather than jumping sequentially from one thing to the next, internet marketing companies should consider developing adaptive models that allow for rapid assimilation of new technologies and trends. As it stands, companies may adopt early with some risk, move with the crowd giving up first mover advantage or wait and see until it?s too painful not to change. The ramp up time to evaluate and adopt new technologies and trends is expensive. As an example, over $100 billion has already been invested in social business and that?s just a drop in the bucket compared to the next 5 years as internet marketing companies implement enterprise collaboration platforms and social technologies.

In order to survive and thrive, I think more internet marketing companies are going to evolve their ability to adapt more quickly, tune in to trends and data more efficiently and at the same time have the infrastructure and partnerships that will allow them to evolve and innovate at greater speed.

From a practical level, the new internet no longer exists on your computer as consumers and content shifts to tablet devices and smartphones. The search experience has not only become distinctly different for consumers through user innovations like Siri, interface and back-end changes but also for internet marketing companies trying to play Google?s game in achieving top search visibility.

If you?re in El Paso or the surrounding areas and need someone to handle your Internet Marketing needs, please call us today at (915) 590-7420.

Romney to outline how he would govern

(AP) ? Mitt Romney will seek this week to explain more about what he would do as president, a strategy shift intended to change the trajectory of a race that President Barack Obama appears to be winning.

Seven weeks before the election, campaign aides say Romney plans to release a new batch of TV ads, re-focus his campaign appearances on his five-point economic plan and make a series of speeches aimed at offering voters a more concrete outline of his plans for the country.

The shift comes as Republicans openly fret about the state of their nominee's campaign and press Romney to give voters a clearer sense of how he would govern. It also comes as polls show Obama with an edge nationally and in key states, and amid reports of infighting at the Boston-based campaign.

The new ads will highlight Romney's plan to create 12 million jobs, cut the deficit and allow the nation to become energy independent. Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, will focus on the debt and deficit in a series of campaign appearances. It's all aimed at giving voters a clearer picture of what Romney would do as president, advisers said.

With the new push, Romney is looking to put behind him a turbulent week that saw him stumbling to respond to an ongoing crisis in the Middle East. And he's spent hours preparing for debates, mindful that they may be his last best hope of overtaking Obama.

Romney advisers spent the weekend in Boston hashing out a plan to right his struggling campaign. On Monday, top advisers planned to explain how the campaign would change tact as the candidate himself began a major push to Hispanic voters.

The new ads ? one called "The Romney Plan," the other attacking Obama as bad for middle-class families ? show Romney doubling down on his core rationale for running: the notion that he can fix the nation's dour economy given his decades of work in the private sector.

The push comes after a new poll by The New York Times and CBS News found that Romney had lost his longstanding edge to Obama on who voters say is most likely to restore the economy and create jobs.

The new strategy represents an attempt to change the dynamics of the race in the few weeks before the first debate on Oct. 3.

That was starting with a speech Monday to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Los Angeles, where Romney planned to outline his long-known specific plans for spending cuts, Medicaid and reducing the federal workforce.

The strategy shift comes as some Republicans worry Romney may be starting to let the campaign get away from him, while others push him to explain more clearly what he would do as president.

Republican concern that Romney's campaign was making mistake after mistake was followed by reports of an organization in disarray. Trouble began with Clint Eastwood's rambling conversation with a chair on the final night of the Republican convention, right before Romney's keynote address omitted the war in Afghanistan or a thanks to the troops serving there.

The intervening weeks have been scattered. Romney ducked battleground states as he hunkered down in Vermont for debate preparation, then spent days defending his decision to omit war from the speech. Polls showed the Democratic convention gave Obama a boost.

Then violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, prompting Romney to put out a statement criticizing the Obama administration before it was known that an American ambassador had died in the attacks. Romney doubled down on his criticism in a press conference the next day.

That drew criticism from both Democrats and Republicans alike. Several in his party, including Arizona Sen. John McCain, have urged Romney to give a major foreign affairs speech laying out his critique of Obama.

Romney's team had planned to try to shift the tide by working harder and spending more on TV. The campaign released a flight of ads for different states during the week of the Democratic convention, but later replaced almost all of them with the same ad attacking Obama's record on China. That was just last week; the new pair of ads comes Monday.

The new push follows a Sunday story on the Politico website detailing infighting among Romney's senior staffers. Campaign advisers worked to downplay those tensions, and to insist the campaign is still on track.

"Obama's entire foreign policy is in flames. The economy is terrible. Let's get a little distance from the convention," top strategist Stuart Stevens wrote in an email Sunday morning.

In Los Angeles, Romney was opening a fresh appeal to Latino voters on Monday, looking to narrow Obama's advantage with them in key battleground states.
