Will Obama meet Mandela?

By Mark Felsenthal and Jeff Mason

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama paid tribute to anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela as he flew to South Africa on Friday but played down expectations of a meeting with the ailing black leader during an Africa tour promoting democracy and food security.

White House officials hope Obama's three-nation tour of Africa - his first substantial visit to the continent since taking office in 2009 - will compensate for what some view as years of neglect by America's first black president.

The health of Mandela, the 94-year-old former South African president clinging to life in a Pretoria hospital, dominated Obama's day even before he arrived in Johannesburg.

"I don't need a photo op," Obama told reporters aboard Air Force One after leaving Senegal. "The last thing I want to do is to be in any way obtrusive at a time when the family is concerned with Nelson Mandela's condition."

Mandela's ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, said his condition had improved in the past few days.

Nearly 1,000 trade unionists, Muslim activists and South African Communist Party members marched through the capital to the U.S. Embassy, where they burned an American flag and called Obama's foreign policy "arrogant and oppressive.

Muslim activists held prayers in a car park outside the embassy. Leader Imam Sayeed Mohammed told the group: "We hope that Mandela feels better and that Obama can learn from him."

MANDELA A "PERSONAL HERO"

Obama sees Mandela, also known as Madiba, as a hero. Whether they are able to meet or not, officials said his trip would serve largely as a tribute to the anti-apartheid leader.

Like Mandela, Obama has received the Nobel Peace Prize and both men were the first black presidents of their nations.

Air Force One departed Senegal's coastal capital, Dakar, just before 1100 GMT (0700 ET) and was due to arrive in South Africa around eight hours later. On Friday evening, Obama has no public events scheduled and could go to the hospital then.

"When we get there, we'll gauge the situation," Obama told reporters.

Obama was scheduled to visit Robben Island, where Mandela spent years in prison under South Africa's former white minority regime.

He told reporters his message in South Africa would draw from the lessons of Mandela's life.

"If we focus on what Africa as a continent can do together and what these countries can do when they're unified, as opposed to when they're divided by tribe or race or religion, then Africa's rise will continue," Obama said.

White House officials said Obama would hold a "town hall" on Saturday with youth leaders in Soweto, the Johannesburg township known for 1976 student protests against apartheid.

He will discuss a new exchange program for African students with U.S. colleges and universities. The event will include youth in Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya participating through video conference, and will be televised in those countries, White House officials said.

JAB AT CHINA

Obama's only previous visit to the African continent was a one-day stopover in Ghana at the beginning of his first term.

While acknowledging that Obama has not spent as much time in Africa as people hoped, the White House is eager to highlight what it has done, in part to end unflattering comparisons to accomplishments of predecessors George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

"Given the budget constraints, for us to try to get the kind of money that President Bush was able to get out of the Republican House for massively scaled new foreign aid programs is very difficult," Obama said.

Obama and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives have fought bitterly over government spending. U.S. foreign aid is a perennial target for lawmakers who want more budget cuts.

Before departing Senegal, Obama met farmers and local entrepreneurs to discuss new technologies helping to raise agricultural output in West Africa, one of the world's most under-developed and drought-prone regions. The technical aid in the U.S. government's "Feed the Future" program leverages money from the private sector and aid groups to help small farmers.

Obama said he would announce an initiative to use the same strategies for the power sector, a model he said makes the most of the shrinking U.S. foreign aid budget.

"I think everything we do is designed to make sure that Africa is not viewed as a dependent, as a charity case, but is instead viewed as a partner," he said.

Obama acknowledged that China, Brazil, India and other countries have been increasingly active in Africa and said the United States risks being left behind. But he said the U.S. approach to development is preferred by African leaders.

"They recognize that China's primary interest is being able to obtain access for natural resources in Africa to feed the manufacturers in export-driven policies of the Chinese economy," Obama said.

"Oftentimes that leaves Africa as simply an exporter of raw goods" as opposed to creating long-term jobs, he said.

Kelly Olynyk: A good pick for the Boston Celtics?

Kelly Olynyk was a break-out star at Gonzaga University this year. But is Kelly Olynyk, a 7-foot forward, a good choice for the Boston Celtics?

By David Clark Scott,?Staff writer / June 29, 2013

Gonzaga's Kelly Olynyk scores against Santa Clara during a January 2013 NCAA college basketball game in Santa Clara, Calif. Olynyk was chosen by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA Draft.

There are no sure things in any NBA draft. The parquet floors of the NBA are littered with the shattered hopes and dreams of top draft picks.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But there's good reason for Celtics fans to be optimistic about center/power forward Kelly Olynyk. And let's face it, with the departure of Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett, Boston fans are searching for a silver lining.

Here's why Celtics general manager Danny Ainge traded up in the draft in order to get Olynyk.

Olynyk's no Kevin Garnett but he brings some needed size inside. At 7 feet, 234 pounds, he's a presence in the paint. He's smart (the son of a coach). He's a very efficient shooter, especially inside.

"This season, he took 63% of his shots at the rim and made 73% of them. Owning a variety of weird moves in the post, Olynyk has found many ways to be one of the most efficient players in the country, as he leads the NCAA in PER [Player Efficiency Rating] at 36.2.," points out Sam Vecenie of SB Nation.??

There are some who suggest that Olynyk may be a one-season wonder. He red-shirted in his junior year at Gonzaga to bulk up to play the post position. That turned out to be an intelligent move. He also has some international experience under his belt because he played with Canada's national basketball team while they were preparing for the Olympics.

While he's built to play the post, he's also got a 20-foot jump shoot ? something every successful big man in the NBA has today.?

Olynyk's weaknesses?

Well, Kevin O'Connor of?the Celtics Blog on SB nation is blunt in his assessment:

"His defensive game is nonexistent and he lacks the athletic tools to improve there. He's also not very good on the boards and gets pushed around despite his size. Olynyk lacks the athleticism to move side-to-side defensively, making him a liability in the pick-and-roll. Despite standing at 7-feet tall, he hasn't shown the ability to be a good rebounder at the next level."

Still, on balance, O'Connor likes Ainge's choice.

Taking his strengths, weaknesses, and long, floppy locks into account, what makes Olynyk a good fit for the Celtics?

Ainge is reportedly rebuilding the team around Rajon Rondo ? the one player he says he won't trade ? as well as Jeff Green and Avery Johnson. Ainge will likely use Jared Sullinger and Olynyk to fill the big power-forward shoes left by the departing Kevin Garnett.?

There's no question that this will be a rebuilding year for the Celtics. They will lose a lot of games, and fans will pin for the days of Rivers, Garnett, and Pierce.

But what Ainge finds appealing about Olynyk is that, unlike a lot of college draft picks, he can play in the NBA now. He has the size and shots. But he also has some room for improvement.

Boston.com sports writer Gary Dzen lists five reasons the Celtics took Olynyk, including this one:

"Olynyk is unorthodox, but he's gotten it done at a very high level for Gonzaga. There are two schools to drafting, and the Celtics seem to be moving away from the school of best athlete wins the day. JaJuan Johnson, who was the Celtics' pick in the 2011 draft, had the body but never developed the game.... On the other side, Jared Sullinger, Glen Davis, and Nate Robinson are examples of unorthodox Celtics players who have produced. Boston knows Olynyk can play."

And Olynyk's coach at Gonzaga, Mark Few, tells the Boston Herald's Tom Layman that his former big man has the intangibles to succeed with the Celtics.

?I think he?s a highly competitive person and player,? Few said. ?I think it?s not something he will fear and it will be something he will look forward to. You just put him on the floor and he?s going to do whatever it takes to win.?

9 GIFs That Make Perpetual Motion Machines a Reality

Just imagine what it would be like if we could generate free energy. No need to worry about pollution, or fuel, or effort, or anything. It's no wonder so many people have tried their hands at building perpetual motion machines. And thanks to the magic of GIFs, none of them ever has to fail.

The sad truth is that thanks to physics?specifically pesky things like friction?none of these perpetual motion attempts will ever be more than clever visual tricks. But in at least GIF form they can go on and on and on, and generate some perpetual joy.

This is one of the most common designs: the overbalanced wheel. Thanks to friction, it doesn't really work. There's a motor in there somewhere.

Vatican official arrested in corruption plot

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? A Vatican official has been arrested by Italian police for allegedly trying to illegally bring 20 million euros ($26 million) in cash into the country from Switzerland with a private jet.

Prosecutor Nello Rossi says Monsignor Nunzio Scarano is accused of corruption and slander stemming from the plot and was being held at a Rome prison.

He was allegedly asked by friends to bring back the money that had been given to financier Giovanni Carenzio in Switzerland. Scarano is supposed to have asked Giovanni Zito, a military official, to bring the money back by jet, avoiding customs.

Scarano was allegedly due to pay Zito a commission of 600,000 euros for the work. He paid only an initial installment of 400,000 euros before being arrested.

White House Down Review by The Dove Foundation

Theatrical Release: 6/27/2013

Reviewer: Edwin L. Carpenter
Source: Theater
Writer: James Vanderbilt
Producer: Roland Emmerich
Director: Roland Emmerich
Genre: Action
Runtime: 131 min.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Starring: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal

Synopsis:
In Columbia Pictures' White House Down, Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation's government falling into chaos and time running out, it's up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

Dove Worldview:
This movie is very entertaining and fast moving. It is action-packed, suspenseful and contains several instances of humor and funny one-liners. It is a shame that strong violence and heavy language will prevent families from seeing it together.

During a tour of the White House John Cale (Channing Tatum) winds up unexpectedly aiding the President of the United States (Jamie Foxx) after terrorists attack from within. The problem is compounded as Cale's daughter Emily (Joey King) is on the tour but separated from her father and finds herself in great jeopardy. One of the questions that emerge is: who is behind this White House takeover, a foreign power or a corrupt leader within the government? Could it possibly be a trusted friend of the President? Emily holds the President as a hero and when he learns her life is in danger he does everything in his power along with her dad to get her back from the bad guys. The film features a certain brand of humor such as the President aiming a rifle at a bad guy that is about to take out a loyal man that has been protecting him. The President takes out his glasses and puts them on and then promptly shoots the terrorist!

Despite the themes of loyalty and a father's love for his child, this one definitely falls short of being a family friendly movie.

Sex: An outline of a couple making love in a motel room, image is seen from a distance and is not graphic but the outline is recognizable.
Language: A lot of language, too numerous to count but it includes several utterances of GD, J/JC, an utterance of the "F" bomb and a "Go to H" comment as well as a slang use for testicles.
Violence: A lot of violence; people are shot throughout the film and many in the head although there is comparatively little blood but definitely some instances of blood on bodies; explosions and helicopters are downed and burst into flames; an explosion sends officers flying in the flames; fights and punches are thrown and a young girl is punched in the face; bombs explode.
Drugs: A man takes prescription medication.
Nudity: None
Other: Traitors; disrespect toward leaders.

Zach Braff to star in 'Bullets Over Broadway'

(AP) ? Zach Braff will make his Broadway debut next year in a musical adaptation of Woody Allen's crime caper "Bullets Over Broadway." The only person who might be more excited than Braff is his dad.

"If my father loved two things most, it was Woody Allen movies and Broadway musicals," Braff said by phone from Los Angeles. "When I called my father, I said, 'Are you sitting down?'"

Written by Allen and Douglas McGrath, the story follows a struggling young playwright who is forced to cast a mobster's talentless girlfriend in his latest drama. Braff will play the hero, portrayed by John Cusack in the 1994 film.

"It's thrilling," Braff says. "I keep waking up expecting it to be a dream."

Five-time Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the show, which will start performances in March 2014 at the St. James Theatre. The show will feature a full orchestra playing music of the 1920s.

The musical sees Braff return to his acting roots: He played Allen's son in one scene when he was 18 in the film "Manhattan Murder Mystery" before going to Northwestern University to study film.

"If you would have asked me a couple months ago 'What are your dreams as an actor?' I would have said, 'I'd love to do a Broadway musical one day and I'd love to work with Woody Allen again.' When I got the call from Woody and Susan Stroman, my head sort of exploded."

The rest of the cast will be made up of Vincent Pastore ("The Sopranos"), Betsy Wolfe ("The Mystery of Edwin Drood"), Lenny Wolpe ("The Drowsy Chaperone") and Helene Yorke ("Grease").

Braff grew up in northern New Jersey and caught the performing bug from his father, a lawyer who did community theater for fun. Though he's never done musical theater professionally, Braff often sang as the daydreaming Dr. John "J.D." Dorian on "Scrubs" and he won a Grammy Award for best compilation soundtrack for "Garden State." He says he's already started working with a vocal coach.

After "Scrubs," Braff filmed the dark indie "High Cost of Living" and acted in the off-Broadway play "Trust" and had a part in Sam Raimi's "Oz the Great and Powerful."

Braff also penned a play of his own, "All New People," his first piece of original writing since the 2004 film "Garden State," his sweet ode to disillusionment starring himself and Natalie Portman. "All New People" had a run off-Broadway in 2011 and was later mounted in London, with Braff starring.

Braff this spring turned to the crowd-funding site Kickstarter to raise $2 million in three days to fund his film, "Wish I Was Here" a follow-up to "Garden State." He says he'll work on the film for the rest of the year before hitting Broadway, and he hopes "Wish I Was Here," which he co-wrote with his brother Adam, will be due out in the fall of 2014.

In the meantime, he has a date with Broadway. It's something his father might be interested in, too. "I said to Woody, 'He'll be there more than you.' I said, 'I might need a cot for my father between the matinees and the evening show.'"

Aussie PM Gillard loses leadership ballot to Rudd

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has been ousted as Labor Party leader by her predecessor, Kevin Rudd, in vote of party lawmakers hoping to avoid a huge defeat in upcoming elections.

The ballot took place on Wednesday three years and two days after Gillard ousted Rudd in a similar internal government showdown. It makes him leader of the party, but not prime minister.

Party official Chris Hayes says Gillard lost 57 votes to 45.

Rudd will likely have to demonstrate that he can command a majority of lawmakers in the House of Representatives before the governor-general makes him prime minister. If he cannot, opposition leader Tony Abbott could be asked to form a government or the elections could be moved up from September to August.

Sony SmartWatch 2 unveiled: a water-resistant 'second screen' for Android devices

Sony SmartWatch 2

Sony's taking a second stab at the fledgling wearable category it helped pioneer with today's announcement of the SmartWatch 2. The Android-powered wristwatch retains the familiar remote functionality of its predecessor (i.e., allowing users to answer calls, read email and texts, snap photos, etc.), albeit now from a larger, 1.6-inch (220 x 176) touch display. Sony's packed all of this "second screen" functionality into a handsome, aluminum body design that's crafted to be dust- and water-resistant (IP57), much like the Xperia Z line before it. And for users that want a little variety, the company's also offering a pack-in stainless steel wristband that can be swapped out for any other 24mm strap (Sony plans to offer alternative straps sometime soon).

The SmartWatch 2 also features support for NFC and Bluetooth 3.0, so you can easily pair it with compatible devices running Android 4.0 or higher -- something like the Xperia Z Ultra, perhaps. As for battery life, Sony claims the SmartWatch 2's rated for a maximum of four days with moderate use. But those with a lighter touch, or a penchant for digital wristwatches, may be able to eke out a full week's worth of juice. There's no pricing information to share at the moment, only a semi-concrete global release date for this September. Which is just about enough time for you (or, more likely, your Dad) to dust off that Dick Tracy impersonation.

Use These Home Improvement Tips To Take Care Of Your Largest ...

A lot of people get intimidated when they have to do a home project by themselves. Armed with the right tools and information, you can take on any project. The information below can help you be successful with your home improvement projects.

To keep electric costs down while illuminating your yard, change out your regular porch light for one that has a motion sensor. You can still turn it on manually if need be, and you can also adjust sensitivity on some models.

You can use aluminum foil as a protective covering for certain surfaces before you paint. You should always be careful to avoid having aluminum foil come in contact with anything electrical. The foil protects while you paint and is much easier to work with than tape. Your cleanup will be simple! Allow the paint to fully dry prior to removing the foil.

TIP! Organize your garage using some clear boxes made of plastic and arranging your items by type and use. Even though the bins are transparent, it?s important to properly label them, too.

After a while, ceramic tile loses its shine and looks grungy and worn. You can clean most types of flooring safely and effectively with a simple solution of vinegar and water. Just put some of this solution in a bucket to mop your floors easily. You will likely find that the build-up of dirt has been removed and that the floor will appear as new.

Locate your gas shutoff valve before beginning a project that involves your fireplace, kitchen appliances or anything else related to your gas line. Proceeding with extreme caution is essential in these situations. A fire could damage you and your efforts in any project.

The reasons for why you are replacing a lock determines whether you have to replace all or part of it. The locking action is accomplished by the cylinder. If you have lost your house key, you can change the cylinder without having to change whole lock. If you want to install an upgrade, then revamp the entire unit.

TIP! A homeowner should always hire a licensed contractor to do any home improvement work. No matter where it is that you currently reside, all contractors are required to have some sort of certification from your state.

Make sure the spaces in your home are well-designated prior to placing your home on the market. Buyers shouldn?t have to guess what a space is supposed to be; have appropriate furnishings and accessories in each room. Buyers are visual, and they often have a hard time imagining themselves in a space if it isn?t properly appointed. This can make selling a house easier.

You might have been under the impression that without professional help, it is hard to make home improvements. If you take the information that was in this article, you will likely be able to tackle at least some of the projects, without any help at all.

For more mold related info, visit: http://moldedge.com/mold-inspections/ or try mold remediation Maryland. Home improvement can be fun for all. When you are new, give yourself time to learn the necessary skills. With attention to detail, you can accomplish tasks that you can be very proud of.

Prosecutors want to admit calls in Zimmerman trial

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? Past police dispatcher calls in which George Zimmerman complained about "suspicious" characters in his neighborhood should be presented to jurors at his second-degree murder trial since they show his state of mind and provide context to his fatal encounter with 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a prosecutor argued Tuesday.

Prosecutor Richard Mantei told a Florida judge the five calls are central to the prosecution's argument that Zimmerman committed second-degree murder since it shows his growing ill will at people he viewed as suspicious who were walking through his neighborhood. In each of the calls, which were played for Judge Debra Nelson with the jurors out of the courtroom, Zimmerman described the suspicious characters as black males.

The calls made in the six months before Zimmerman fatally shot Martin on Feb. 26, 2012, reflect the neighborhood watch volunteer's growing frustration with repeated break-ins at his gated community of townhomes and plays into the prosecution's theory that his view of Martin as a suspicious character was "the straw that broke the camel's back," Mantei said.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara argued that the calls were irrelevant and that no previous incidents matter except the seven or eight minutes prior to when Zimmerman fired the deadly shot into Martin's chest.

"They're going to ask the jury to make a leap from a good, responsible, citizen behavior to seething behavior," O'Mara said of the prosecution's depiction of Zimmerman's actions.

Nelson said she would make a ruling after reviewing prior cases.

Prosecutors called to the stand a Sanford police sergeant who was the second officer to respond to the scene after Zimmerman fatally shot Martin. Sgt. Tony Raimondo testified that he tried to seal a bullet wound in Martin's chest with a plastic bag and attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Bubbling sounds indicated that air was escaping the teen's chest, Raimondo said.

Martin was pronounced dead a short time later.

During Raimondo's testimony, prosecutors showed jurors a photo of Martin's dead body face-down in the grass, another of Martin's body face up with his eyes slightly open and a third of the bullet wound. Martin's father, Tracy Martin, walked out of the courtroom during the testimony.

Zimmerman, 29, could get life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder for gunning down Martin as the black teenager, wearing a hoodie on a dark, rainy night, walked from a convenience store through the gated townhouse community where he was staying. Zimmerman is pleading not guilty, claiming self-defense.

The case took on racial dimensions after Martin's family claimed that Zimmerman had racially profiled the teen and that police were dragging their feet in bringing charges. Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, has denied the confrontation had anything to do with race.

Prosecutors also called the former coordinator of the Sanford Police Department's neighborhood watch program, who testified how she had worked with Zimmerman to set up a watch program in his neighborhood, The Retreat at Twin Lakes.

When asked by prosecutor John Guy if neighborhood watch participants should either follow or engage with suspicious people, she answered "no."

"They are the eyes and ears of law enforcement," said Wendy Dorival, the Sanford Police manager. "They're not supposed to take matters into their own hands."

But Dorival said she was impressed with Zimmerman's professionalism and dedication to his community and asked him to join another program, Citizens on Patrol, which trained residents to patrol their neighborhoods. He declined.

"He seemed like he really wanted to make changes in his community, to make it better," Dorival said.

The president of Zimmerman's homeowners association also testified that Zimmerman was in charge of the neighborhood watch program started in his townhome complex. He said Zimmerman was the person who went through a class offered by Sanford police to get it started.

Donald O'Brien said he also attended a neighborhood watch meeting led by Zimmerman and it was O'Brien's understanding that participating residents "were supposed to stay away" from suspicious activity and "call the police."

"Do not get close to anybody," O'Brien said of what he understood about neighborhood watch. "Stay at a safe distance and call 911. Let the police handle it."

The prosecution began opening statements Monday in the long-awaited murder trial with shocking language, repeating obscenities Zimmerman uttered while talking to a police dispatcher moments before the deadly confrontation.

The defense opened with a knock-knock joke about the difficulty of picking a jury for a case that stirred nationwide debate over racial profiling, vigilantism and Florida's expansive laws on the use of deadly force.

Guy portrayed the then-neighborhood watch volunteer as a vigilante, saying, "Zimmerman thought it was his right to rid his neighborhood of anyone who did not belong."

Defense attorney Don West told jurors a different story: Martin sucker-punched Zimmerman and then pounded his head against the concrete sidewalk, and that's when Zimmerman opened fire.

Afghans rush to learn risky art of defusing bombs

CAMP BLACK HORSE, Afghanistan (AP) ? In a desolate field outside Kabul, an Afghan soldier hunches over a knee-high robot equipped with cameras, multidirectional pincers and tank-treads built for rough terrain. Carefully, he attaches four bottles of water and a tiny explosive charge to the robot. He uses a remote control to guide it 50 meters (yards) away to his target: a simulated backpack bomb.

"Explosion! Explosion! Explosion!" shouts the soldier, Naqibullah Qarizada, in a warning to others nearby. Then he remotely detonates the charge.

A small dust cloud kicks up. If all has gone well, the blast has pushed the water into the bomb with enough force to knock out its triggering mechanism. But to be safe, his partner, Hayatullah, climbs into a heavy protective suit before lumbering over to pluck out the blasting cap and seal it in a fortified box.

The two men are among hundreds of Afghan soldiers training to take over the dangerous fight against the war's biggest killers: the Taliban-planted bombs known as IEDs that kill and maim thousands of people each year on and around the country's roads and towns.

A few years ago, there were almost no Afghan bomb disposal experts. Now, there are 369 ? but that's far from enough. The international coalition is rushing to train hundreds more before the exit of most coalition forces by the end of next year.

Each day on average, two to three roadside or buried bombs explode somewhere in Afghanistan, according to numbers compiled by the United Nations, which says that the explosives killed 868 civilians last year, 40 percent of the civilian deaths in insurgent attacks. Also, buried or roadside bombs accounted for 64 percent of the 3,300 international coalition troops killed or wounded last year, the NATO force says.

Known in military parlance as improvised explosives devices (IEDs), the bombs have long been a favorite Taliban weapon that can be remotely detonated by radio or mobile phone when a target passes or triggered by pressure, like a vehicle driving over it.

The U.S. military has over the years developed advanced detection and disposal techniques that manage to defuse about 40 to 50 IEDs each day, says Col. Ace Campbell, chief of the Counter-IED training unit. The coalition is working to transfer that knowledge to the Afghans who will be responsible once most foreign troops leave next year, and Campbell says Afghan teams are now finding and disposing about half of the bombs most days.

"Whenever I hear about an IED or I find one myself ? maybe you will laugh, but I become very happy," says Hayatullah, 28, who has completed the highest level of training and like many Afghans uses just one name. "I am happy because it is my duty to defuse it, and I will save the lives of several people."

Hayatullah also has a personal reason for his chosen profession ? his father was killed in a mine explosion. He was just 13 when unknown attackers planted two anti-personnel mines outside their home in Parwan province, and he says the memory fuels his desire to save others.

The country's main bomb disposal school is located at Camp Black Horse, set among a dust-swept field on Kabul's eastern outskirts, where a rusted-out Russian tank looms on a distant hill, a reminder of Afghanistan's long legacy of war dating back to the 1980s Soviet occupation.

Here, a team of about 160 instructors runs 19 different courses, ranging from a basic four-week awareness program for regular Afghan soldiers to the eight-month advanced "IED defeat" course that is a slightly shorter version of the U.S. Army's own counter-explosives training.

"We are giving them the best instruction that we have available, and they are picking it up," said U.S. Army Maj. Joel Smith, one of the training program's leaders. "Some are getting killed, some are dropping out, but their numbers are growing."

Still, it is a race against time to produce enough experts to fill the gap left by foreign troops' withdrawal. On Tuesday, NATO formally handed over full security responsibility to Afghanistan's fledgling 350,000-strong security forces, though many of the remaining foreign troops will stay until next year in a support and training role.

The goal is to have 318 full-fledged Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams, each with two or three Afghan experts, spread out around the country. But Afghan security forces now have less than 60 percent of the bomb specialists they need ? hence the fever pitch of training.

"These guys are on a more accelerated program due to necessity," Smith said.

Equipping the Afghan teams is also a challenge. The coalition plans to distribute 12,000 metal detectors to regular police and army units, and each of the specialized disposal teams is slated to receive one of the high-tech robots that Qarizada and Hayatullah were working with. But Smith said each of the robots costs $17,000, and so far only about half of those needed are in the hands of Afghan teams. And that is not even taking into account who will maintain the sophisticated machines in a country where dust clogs nearly every machine and technical expertise is scarce.

Bomb disposal units gained widespread fame with the 2008 film "The Hurt Locker," but in real life the process ? while still dangerous ? is much slower and more methodical. The ultimate goal is to try not to approach a live bomb until it's been neutralized, which is the point of the exercise with the robot and the protective suit.

But with thousands of buried bombs and more being planted every day, it's impossible to have such sophisticated tools everywhere. That's why the program also trains regular Afghan army and police for four weeks in how to recognize signs of a smaller IED ? freshly moved earth, or perhaps a conveniently placed culvert next to a bridge ? and neutralize it in the crudest but simplest way: setting a smaller charge, moving far, far away and blowing it up in place.

Even such basic disposal takes weeks of training. Sitting attentively on rows of benches under a lean-to in the field, a group of Afghan soldiers listens to contractor James Webber, a former U.S. Air Force bomb disposal expert, as he explains how long to make a fuse so whoever sets it can then dash away for four minutes, or 240 seconds, to safety before the charge blows.

"So, 240 seconds divided by our burn rate - what do you get? Anyone got a calculator?" Webber asks.

The recruits nod, squint, calculate.

WSJ: Facebook Is Developing a Flipboard-Style News Reader

So long Google Reader, hello... Facebook? The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Zuckerberg and co are working on a service that "displays content from Facebook users and publishers in a new visual format tailored for mobile devices".

Citing "people with knowledge of the matter", the newspaper suggests that the service?known internally as a Reader?has been under development for more than a year. Apparently it resembles Flipboard, letting users quickly swipe through posts and articles, and it's limited to mobile; there's no mention of a desktop app.

It's unclear if Facebook is planning to launch the app or that matter?if it does?whether it will keep the name Reader. But if it does make its take on feed reading public you can bet it'll be commercial laden, as the folks at Facebook desperately to try generate ad revenue.

Arguably, Facebook doesn't have the best track record when it comes to branching out from social with its apps?remember Poke??and with plenty of others clamouring for the news feed top spot thanks to the demise of Google Reader, competition will be tough. We'll just have to wait and see what comes of the app?if it ever sees the light of day. [Wall Street Journal]

Canada flood could force evacuation

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) ? Calgary's mayor warned Friday that the worst of the flooding is yet to come after a significant portion of his city's population spent the night pulling back to higher ground. Officials have estimated that as many as 100,000 could be out of their homes.

Entire neighborhoods all along the Bow and Elbow rivers have been cleared of inhabitants as many downtown neighborhoods were ordered evacuated in Calgary, a city of more than a million people that hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said early Friday morning he's never seen the rivers that high or that fast.

Low-lying areas along the river started to flood Thursday night and there was water filling up some underpasses. There was water in the streets of the Bowness area in the city's northwest. The city has not said to what extent any homes have been flooded.

Police urged people to stay away from downtown and not go to work. All schools ? both Catholic and public ? are closed, while Catholic schools in the communities of Chestermere, Airdrie and Cochrane were also to be shuttered.

The Calgary Zoo, located on St. George's Island, closed its gates and started taking steps "to secure and move animals to safe locations."

Contingency plans called for big cats, such as lions and tigers, to be moved into prisoner cells at the Calgary courthouse. But the city said that hadn't happened yet.

The Calgary mayor spent Thursday night and Friday morning hours touring all the affected areas.

He said it appeared that the smaller Elbow river had reached its peak. The same could not be said for the larger Bow.

The province reported that 12 communities were under states of emergency.

It had been a rainy week throughout much of Alberta, but on Thursday the Bow River Basin was battered with up to 100 millimeters (4 inches)of rain. Environment Canada's forecast calls for more rain today in the area, but in much smaller amounts.

Calgary is not alone in its weather-related woes. There were flashpoints of chaos from Banff and Canmore and Crowsnest Pass in the Rockies and south to Lethbridge.

Torrential rains and widespread flooding throughout southern Alberta have also forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway and isolated the mountain resort towns of Banff and Canmore. The flooding washed out roads and bridges, left at least one person missing and caused cars, couches and refrigerators to float away.

Officials in High River estimated half of the people in its town have experienced flooding in their homes. People had to be rescued from some rooftops by boat or in buckets of heavy machinery. Others swam for their lives from stranded cars.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police called in the military, which sent two helicopters and a Hercules aircraft to help rescue those stranded in areas where roads had been washed out.

Pictures from inside the mountain town of Canmore also a raging river ripping at the foundations of homes.

Bruce Burrell, director of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, said water levels on the Bow River aren't expected to subside until Saturday afternoon.

"Depending on the extent of flooding we experience overnight, there may be areas of the city where people are not going to be able to get into until the weekend," he told a news conference.

Rise of Blackthorn City, Recruiting! (Sci-Fi,Fantasy)

Rise of Blackthorn City

This Roleplay IS new and has infact, not begun! The world is there and the plot is ready, New roleplayers are always needed and welcome, but currently to begin the main plotline I need characters specifically to fill these roles at the very least. If you are not interested in the following roles. Feel free to make a character and join anyway! Be it in a role of your own making,as a citizen of Blackthorn or as a solo resistance fighter.

Beware incoming walls of text! (Stupid...lack of spoiler tags...*grumbles*)

Currently required roles
Leader of the Black Hand group.
Leader of Clan Ragnarok
Leaders of Various Resistance groups (Atleast two or three would be best but one can work.)

Brief description of main groups requiring leaders

The Black Hand:

The Black Hand are a group of thieves, muggers and saboteurs who used to make up The Scarred Legions Third Branch. They brought in most of the income and worked to disable and distract enemy's of the group aswell as the general police. Allowing The Legion to stay under the radar and to expand rapidly at the same time as crushing their opposition. However upon taking control of the city The Black Hand was cast aside to make way for The Black Cloaks, as The Legion now controlled all of the city's income and resources and no longer had use for thieves. The Hand now find themselves working for the various resistance groups, doing the same job they did FOR The Legion, against The Legion. Sabotaging systems, Hacking computer networks, Stealing cargo and other such things to fund the various groups willing to fight and destroy The Legion.

Clan Ragnarok:

Clan Ragnarok are a relatively large group, consisting of warrior's from all walks of life. Mages, Snipers,Warriors, Dragon's you name it. Even the "Holy" Paladin type folk are seen walking amongst Clan Ragnarok's halls. This group is one of the Three main branches of The Scarred Legion and serves as its army, it's guards and it's labour force. Clan Ragnarok is the only branch in The Legion that is completely neutral, with the other branches being as evil as The Legion itself. Clan Ragnarok is simply a large gathering of fighters who all fight under one banner and have a single leader and employer, functioning as an army-scale group of mercenaries, bounty hunters and arena fighters.

Brief Overview (Stolen from the introduction of the Roleplay)

Rise of Blackthorn City is intended to be a futuristic fantasy RP based in and around the City of Blackthorn, formerly The City of New Glim. By incorporating futuristic technology and a dystopian world, with locations, weapons, magic, races etc that are associated with the fantasy genre aswell as the sci-fi genre. I intend for alot of the content to be added by the player's but sadly, for the sake of not having god's and demi-gods roaming the place,or other such characters, races or random magic abilities that can easily take on The Legion. I will be keeping some form of tabs on as much as I can to keep the basic plot together. This by no means that despite the plot being there and available that you are confined to it, Player's are free to go off and do their own side plots or things on their own. I am providing the world and the main plot-line,not forcing you into a story.

For the sake of character creation and easy reference here are a few tid-bits of information.

It's The Year 4110
Geography: The Planet is called Kandor and is an Alternate Earth. Upto around 2300 nation and geography wise its the same as now. Beyond that nations are simply re-named and the world itself remains relatively the same map-wise.
The City: The city itself is humungous. It is not simply a single city as we see them now,but a massive undertaking that spread a city across a space of land the rough size of Tasmania (That little thing at the bottom of Australia.) When compared to the rest of the world its rather small, but for one city its large enough to be its own state.
Technology: Technology is highly advanced and futuristic,Think Sci-Fi here! Happily and sadly though, Apple does not exist here, nor Microsoft. Both were gone from this world almost 1000 years ago.
Races etc: Think of anything you want! Aslong as I can look at you're character and not see nonesense or a ridiculously overpowered creation then anything is welcome! Get Creative!

Teaser Excerpt from History

That is,until The Scarred Legion came. An underground crime syndicate that had kept it's head low and under the radar from the police and the government. After both had been over-thrown or dissolved by the worlds people they had risen seemingly from hell itself. An army of the damned, the insane or the broken rising up from the sewers and the slums of New Glim to take control. The people had no chance, pockets of resistance tried to fight back but The Legion had been preparing for war for years and easily took control of the city. They created their own "government" and the resources and taxes all went to them. In less then a month it became a city ruled by fear and force. It wasn't all bad though, The Scarred Legion had made a promise when they created their government, a speech was made by their leader who was only ever known by his nickname. The War Torn Wolf.

"Impale,Burn and Shred. The Scarred Legion shall rise, and aye have we risen New Glim! I made a promise to ye all back in the hay-day of The Legion. Ye can break it down, tear the planet apart and burn it but I'll still rebuild it mehself,in my own image! Well citizens of New Glim, that's exactly what I intend to do! Starting from now, half o' the resources and taxes are to be put towards rebuildin' the damn planet, but none of this high-tech nonesense yer all so fond of. No,I'll rebuild it, as you lot seem to like putting it. Just as nature intended, sure there'll be a few hints of tech in there I ain't god,but as far as I'm concerned this is my world now, if I change my mind and make a few high-tech pieces o' land then who are ye to complain?, Now go about yer business as normal but, just one more thing. Remember kiddies, The Legion is alway's in control, always watching, ye will NEVER get rid o' us." -The War Torn Wolf.

In that instant half of what was already a now tiny world, the last city. Was burnt, nothing but rubble and industrial wasteland lay's to the north of the clocktower now, The resistance fights heavier there but the air is so thick with smog and pollution, the land so scorching hot that most every humanoid has to wear a cloak and breathing mask. The clocktower became The Legions new fortress and hub of control and it is around this time that you come into the picture.

The year is 4110 on The City of Blackthorn,The place once known as New Glim and The Planet that had been known as Kandor, Your choices are laid before you.

If you have any questions about the Role-play that I have not put in the Introduction,or on this page post it below or send me a PM and I will answer it the best I can! Life is merely a puzzle, and every being, every object, every speck of existence. Is but a small piece of an infinitely expanding picture.

Friend: Stricken Gandolfini found by family member

ROME (AP) ? A friend of "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini said Thursday the actor was discovered by a family member in his hotel room in Rome before he was pronounced dead of cardiac arrest at a hospital.

Michael Kobold, who described himself as a close family friend, read a short statement to reporters, but said little more about the circumstances of Gandolfini's death on Wednesday night.

He did not say who discovered Gandolfini, 51, but NBC quoted Antonio D'Amore, manager of the Boscolo Excedra hotel, as saying it was the actor's 13-year-old son, Michael.

Gandolfini had appeared in advertisements for Kobold's company, Kobold Watches.

Gandolfini was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. Wednesday in Rome after being taken by ambulance to the Policlinic Umberto I hospital.

Dr. Claudio Modini, head of the hospital emergency room, said Gandolfini arrived at the hospital at 10:40 p.m. (2040 GMT; 4:40 p.m. EDT) and was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts in the ambulance and hospital failed.

An autopsy would be performed starting 24 hours after the death, as required by law, Modini told The Associated Press.

The actor, known for his portrayal of the tortured Italian-American mob boss Tony Soprano, was to have received an award and taken part in the closing ceremony Saturday of the Taormina Film Festival, which takes place against the backdrop of Taormina's spectacular Roman amphitheater.

He also was to have given a special class Saturday morning at the festival, as was done by actor Jeremy Irons earlier in the week.

Festival organizers Mario Sesti and Tiziana Rocca said instead they would organize a tribute "to celebrate his great achievement and talent." They said they had heard from Gandolfini a few hours before he died, and "he was very happy to receive this award and be able to travel to Italy."

"The Sopranos" was a hit when it first aired in Italy in 2001, with critics giving it rave reviews, despite some criticism from Italian-Americans across the Atlantic who thought it stereotyped them.

"Rarely does one see fiction so intelligent, ironic, full of psychological and narrative subtleties. And the dialogue! The photography!" Italy's most prominent TV critic, Aldo Grasso, gushed in the leading daily Corriere della Sera after the first episode aired. "Trust me, don't miss 'The Sopranos!'"

The daily La Repubblica called the show a "masterpiece." The paper deplored that it was being "hidden" from viewers by being aired at the unenviable 12:30 a.m. timeslot and urged it to be moved up ? something former Premier Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset network eventually did, showing it at 11:30 p.m.

Gandolfini's death was one of the top news stories in Italy on Thursday, with American tourists outside his hotel well aware of the tragedy.

"I thought he was a great actor," said William Capece, visiting Rome from Houston, Texas. "Pretty sad because it is a big loss to the field of acting."

The U.S. Embassy in Rome, which said it had learned about the death from the media, said it would be available to provide a death certificate and help prepare the body for return to the United States. The embassy said it can often take between four and seven days to arrange for it to be sent outside of Italy.

The embassy spokesman declined further comment, directing inquiries to the family.

It isn't yet known yet what caused his heart to stop beating. Sudden cardiac arrest can be due to a heart attack, a heart rhythm problem, or a result of trauma. The chance of cardiac arrest increases as people get older; men over age 45 have a greater risk. Men in general are up to three times more likely to have a sudden cardiac arrest than women.
