Slain Texas constable remembered as humble, caring

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ? Compassionate. Humble. A good friend. A dedicated public servant.
Those were some of the words that family and friends used during a funeral service Saturday to fondly remember a law enforcement officer who was among three people killed in a shootout near Texas A&M University.
More than 3,000 people attended the service for Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann at an arena on the A&M campus in College Station. Among those in attendance were law enforcement officers from across the state, including Lubbock in West Texas and Hidalgo County in South Texas. A choir of more than 80 people from Bachmann's Methodist church in College Station sang during the service.
"Brian would sacrifice himself for the benefit of others, always," his mother, Carmen Bachmann, said as she stood on a stage above her son's flag-draped coffin.
Authorities say Bachmann was fatally shot Monday by Thomas Alton Caffall III. The 41-year-old constable was trying to serve Caffall with a court summons for being two months behind on rent. Other officers fatally shot the 35-year-old Caffall.
A bystander also was killed in the shootout, and three police officers and a female bystander were wounded.
Caffall's family has said he was suffering from an unspecified mental illness and has stated, "It breaks our hearts his illness led to this."
During Saturday's more than 2? hour-long service, the Rev. Tommy Myrick, a pastor at the constable's church, said Bachmann hated serving evictions and when he would have to put someone out of their home, he would do whatever he could to find them a new one.
"He would help them with property transport to a safe place and the thing is he didn't have to do that," Myrick said. "Brian was going to try and find that guy (Caffall) a place to live. There's no doubt in my mind when he stepped out of his car (on Monday he was) thinking, 'Where will I find this guy a place to live?'"
Bachmann, who was married and the father of four children, had worked nearly 20 years in law enforcement. He had been a constable since January 2011, after winning election to the post the prior November.
Authorities say Bachmann had gone to a home near the university's football stadium to deliver a notice for Caffall to appear in court on Aug. 23 because he owed $1,250 in rent.
Officers who later arrived at the scene found Bachmann shot on the lawn of the house. Police say it appears that Bachmann never fired his weapon.
Police said officers shot and killed Caffall after a more than 20-minute shootout. Caffall fired more than 65 rounds during the incident. Authorities found four weapons in Caffall's home, including a handgun he took from Bachmann after fatally shooting him. The other weapons were a semi-automatic sniper rifle, an assault rifle and a bolt-action rifle.
Also killed in the shootout was Chris Northcliffe, 51, who had been checking on a nearby home he owned. His funeral service was held earlier Saturday in College Station, located 100 miles northwest of Houston.
The three wounded officers have been treated and released. The wounded female bystander, Barbara Holdsworth from Houston, remains hospitalized but her friends say she is improving.
During the funeral service, friends and family members told stories of how Bachmann was dedicated to helping others and how he preferred finding solutions to problems rather than simply writing a ticket. They also talked about his infectious smile and recalled humorous anecdotes about Bachmann's propensity for wrecking patrol vehicles when he was a sheriff's deputy.
"He genuinely wanted to help people," said Marc Hamlin, the Brazos County district clerk and a close friend of Bachmann's. "He truly believed that people were good."
Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk, another close friend, said Bachmann was dedicated to doing the best job he could. Kirk said he had hoped Bachmann would one day run for sheriff and take over his job.
"We will never know when the door to eternity will open. In Brian's case it was on Fidelity Street in College Station (the street where he was fatally shot)," Kirk said, his voice trembling with emotion. "Brian had no chance to defend himself. However, Brian was prepared for eternity.
"I will truly miss my good friend Brian," the sheriff said. "God bless his soul and may he rest in peace."
Brad Bachmann, the constable's father, shared stories about Bachmann as a young boy and how he "wanted to be the best cop in the world."
"This is not goodbye but see you later," he said as he saluted his son.

Gold Looks to US Data for Fed QE3 Guidance, Oil Outlook Clouded

Gold is looking to US economic data to inform Fed QE3 expectations and shape direction while inconsistent risk trends cloud the outlook for crude oil.
Talking Points
- Crude Oil, Copper Outlook Clouded Amid Inconsistent Risk Trends
- Gold, Silver May Fall if UofM Data Weighs on QE3 Bets, Boosts Dollar
Commodity prices are treading water in European hours, with all eyes are on the University of Michigan gauge of US Consumer Confidence. Expectations call for the measure to edge slightly lower to 72.2 in August from 72.3 in the prior month. Traders will look to the report to gauge the degree of follow-though on July?s stronger-than-expected employment and retail sales figures.
Traders? response to the Retail Sales report suggests an upside surprise may be interpreted in terms of reducing Fed stimulus bets, boosting the US Dollar amid receding dilution fears. That threatens to weigh on gold and silver on fading inflation-hedge demand. The likely response from growth-geared crude oil and copper prices is unclear however, with trading patterns somewhat inconsistent of late as the late-summer lull takes a toll on trading volumes. That means finding clear trends in whatever happens over the coming 24 hours will probably prove challenging.
WTI Crude Oil (NY Close): $95.60 // +1.27 // +1.35%
Prices continued higher as expected after taking out resistance at 93.90, the 50% Fibonacci retracement, with buyers now testing the February 2 swing low at 95.41. A breach of this boundary clears the way for a challenge of the 61.8% Fib at 97.82. The 93.90 has been recast support, with a reversal back below that aiming for the July 19 close at 92.51.
Spot Gold (NY Close): $1615.10 // +12.00 // +0.75%
Prices continue to drift below resistance in the 1620.45-35.70 congestion area. Near-term support remains at a rising trend line support set from late June, now at 1598.30. A break below this boundary exposes a longer-term trend line established from the May 16 bottom, currently at 1577.26. Alternatively, a push above resistance initially targets 1677.79, the May 1 swing high.
Spot Silver (NY Close): $28.22 // +0.38 // +1.38%
Prices continue to stall above support at 27.68. A break downward initially exposes a rising trend line set from the June 28 low, now at 27.36. Near-term resistance remains at 28.44, with a breach above that opening the door for an advance to challenge 29.42.
COMEX E-Mini Copper (NY Close): $3.382 // +0.032 // +0.96%
Prices are probing above resistance at a falling trend line set from the April 3 high, a barrier reinforced by a horizontal level at 3.435. A break to the upside initially exposes 3.535. near-term resistance lines up at 3.387, followed by the 3.300-32 area.

Suspect in Washington shooting expressed political grudge
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The man charged in a shooting at a conservative Christian lobbying group in downtown Washington told a guard "I don't like your politics" before wounding him, according to court documents filed on Thursday.
Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, of Herndon, Virginia, also was carrying 15 sandwiches from Chick-fil-A, a fast-food chain, in the Wednesday shooting at the Family Research Council, a criminal complaint said.
The Family Research Council strongly opposes same-sex marriage and abortion, and Corkins had worked as a volunteer at a Washington center for homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender people. Chick-fil-A's president has publicly opposed same-sex marriage.
Corkins' parents told FBI agents that Corkins "has strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner," the complaint said.
Corkins faces a District of Columbia charge of assault with intent to kill while armed. He also is charged with interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition.
He will make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court on Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Attorney's office said.
The complaint said Corkins entered the offices of the Family Research Council and was stopped at the door by a security guard, according to the complaint.
A witness told FBI agents that Corkins "stated words to the effect of, 'I don't like your politics,'" the complaint said.
Surveillance camera footage showed that Corkins then pulled a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol from a backpack and shot the guard in the arm. The wounded guard wrestled the gun from Corkins and subdued him. A second guard called 911, the complaint said.
Investigators recovered two more loaded magazines at the scene. They found another 50 rounds of ammunition and the Chick-fil-A sandwiches in Corkins' backpack.
The complaint said that Corkins lived with his parents. He had left their car at a Virginia subway station before the attack.
Corkins faces up to 10 years in prison for the federal weapons charge and up to 30 years for the District of Columbia offense. The District of Columbia charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years.
