DINAS POWYS, Wales (AP) ? Charlotte Church's nearly $1 million settlement Monday with Rupert Murdoch's company provides vindication for a former child singing sensation caught in a web of tabloid intrigue as she grew into her teens.
But she does not believe the company's apology was sincere.
Outside London's High Court after receiving 600,000 pounds ($951,000) in a settlement from News International, Church attacked the tabloid culture that turned her life upside down: "They are not truly sorry. They are just sorry they got caught."
In a weekend interview with The Associated Press at her home in the village of Dinas Powys in south Wales, Church said she was looking forward to putting her legal troubles behind her and concentrating on her career and her young children.
"I'm a singer," Church said, wearing a casual blue dress while sitting scrunched up in a small chair in her home studio, littered with electric guitars and a couple of dirty plates left by her bandmates.
"I've always wanted to sing. I never wanted to be famous. I always want to perform live, and I've really, really missed that. Hopefully it will be a little bit fairer moving forward."
Church, who debuted at age 11 with an angelic voice that soared to classical song, is now a 26-year-old mother of two. Instead of preparing for what would undoubtedly have been a harrowing trial, she spends her free time in a garage studio next to her home, recording comeback tunes with local musicians.
The tracks-in-progress, covering a range of pop styles, are a reminder that before she was tabloid fodder ? characterized as a loose teenager with a fondness for booze and cigarettes ? she was a showstopping vocalist who had performed for a pope and a president and become a regular on the Oprah Winfrey show.
Her voice still soars, seemingly without effort, despite the occasional cigarette.
Church keeps the studio locked, along with the gate that blocks her driveway, and she doesn't talk freely on the telephone. Suspicion is a residue of the phone hacking scandal, even if reporters no longer hide in her bushes or tap her phone messages.

"I felt sick to my stomach at what I'd been put through, and what my parents had been put through for this company's gain," she said.
"We were going to take this forward, to know what went on. We had a strong case, a lot of evidence. I wanted it to be as public as possible. But we settled for many different reasons. It's really difficult ? they've got 25 lawyers, and you've got four. They had massive resources, and they weren't going to take it lying down."
She does not believe her involvement in the case will end with Monday's settlement.
Church said phone numbers for her American publicist and agent were found in private detective Glenn Mulcaire's notes, which could be significant because Mulcaire was jailed after having been found to have hacked into the phones of some people mentioned in his handwritten notes.
She believes her agent and publicist may have been hacked as well, indicating that crimes may have been committed in the United States, not just Britain, raising the legal peril for Murdoch, whose company is headquartered in New York.
"That shows how large their web is," said Church.
Church was just 11 when she shot to fame with her uncanny mastery of classical standards. The intensity of tabloid scrutiny picked up pace in her mid-teenage years ? when she branched out into pop music ? as her romantic life, nights out on the town and even her cigarette smoking sparked racy front-page stories.
The pressure has eased in the last few years as Church has stayed out of the public eye while raising her two young children.
She lives in a spacious house with attractive grounds ? and neighbors who protect her privacy. The living room is filled with teddy bears and has a casual, lived-in look, but a home-office on top of the garage has been turned into a "war room" for her legal battle with the Murdoch empire.
Church believes the tabloids have done lasting damage to her career. Her voice is intact; she believes her reputation is not.
"I realize now their power, their absolute power," she said. "People really believe the things that are written, and a lot of the things they wrote weren't me at all, not the things I was saying, not my viewpoints, and I just realized they were shaping how people viewed me. I became a cartoon character, a soap opera character. It was constant, every day, from 16 to 21. There was always someone outside my house, following me."
Church said she cut off many of her close childhood friends because she thought they were selling stories about her to the press ? only to find out last summer that the tabloids had been getting the information from her voicemails.
She's apologized to her girl friends, but in some cases the damage could not be undone.
"They were really angry, I've had to go around to them and say, 'I'm sorry, I'm really sorry that I thought that of you but it was a really confusing time and we didn't know the broader picture.' I thought, I just have to limit the people I'm in daily contact with."
Her advice to any young, attractive singers likely to draw newspaper attention?
"Be careful, be very careful," she said. "It's dangerous."

Nvidia is taking a stab at upping the touch-responsiveness of Tegra 3-equipped devices by offloading some of the touch input responsibilities directly onto Tegra 3. They call this ?DirectTouch?.
Nvidia demonstrates that the Xoom with Nvidia Tegra 2 can handle around 110 touch samples/second with one finger. As each finger is added, the number of samples/second drops. With Tegra 3 and DirectTouch, samples/second nearly double to around 200 for one finger. As more fingers are added, it seems that DirectTouch?intelligently?scales to keep the samples/second around 200, even with 10 individual inputs!
What an increased number of samples/second really means is more accuracy. Increasing the samples/second by 2x as we see here means that the hardware and software are able to record where the input is happening twice as often. At slow speeds, such as scrolling a webpage, this isn?t all that important. However, as the speed of the input increases, the samples/second become more important to maintain accuracy, which is why Nvidia says that this will be particularly useful for gaming.

The question felt mandatory.
I'd talked to several savvy restaurant playmakers along Dolores more than a few times about how easy it would be to launch a open-air market with a little entertainment, a little booth or two and a lot of flavor. We all agreed it would be big draw for strolling locals.
So when the Weekly Editorial Board had the candidates for Carmel mayor, City Councilman Jason Burnett (above right) and restaurateur Rich Pepe (left), in for a chitchat this week, I couldn't help but ask, What am I missing? While they're invoking terms like "walkability" (Burnett) and concepts like "bringing the downtown back downtown" (Pepe) repeatedly, and shareholders and participants alike are on board for a fair or farmers market or whatever you want to call it, why isn't it happening?
Their replies gave me hope.
"It's one of my priorities," Burnett said. "It excites me and the community at large, having a regular event on, say, a Thursday afternoon. It would take advantage of the pedestrian nature of town, allow restaurants to expand onto street, have some live music or a silent movie?some activity [where] the larger community has a reason to come?It really needs to be a partnership between the business and the city. The city can provide ability to close off street, police assistance?"
Then it was Pepe's turn.
"On surface, why not?" he asked. "But down deep, in Carmel, it's tough to change a light bulb, let alone put on a street fair. Jason and I agree on this. We want a walkable city with interesting things to do. Just like kitchen is the center of the home, downtown is the center of community life. The challenge we face: We need a strong leader, a strong ambassador, to [counter] the vocal minority who is against everything. If you win, Jason, I hope you follow through. If I win, I hope I follow through. It's so important to keep pace with cities and towns up and down the coast."
That conversation comes in the context of a race that's about as foodie-fied as any I've seen. Pepe, after all, is one of the most influential restaurant owners in the area, with a buffet of largely lively eateries like Little Napoli (626-PEPE), Vino Napoli Wine Bar (626-7373), Peppoli (647-7433), Vesuvio (626-7373) and Carmel Bakery (626-7373) in his portfolio. But Burnett is making a push to brand Carmel as more of a food town too.
A few hours after our powwow at the Weekly, Burnett hosted a campaign event at slow-food darling Carmel Belle with pioneering conscious food journalist Eric Schlosser. Here's Carmel beat reporter Sara Rubin's report from the event:
About 100 people, including Carmel-area dignitaries attended, including Merv Sutton, Councilman Ken Talmage, Planning Commissioner/council candidate Victoria Beach, Greg D'Ambrosio, Salinas City Councilman Steve McShane, Weekly contributor Jamie Collins (described by Schlosser as "one of the coolest farmers in the U.S."), Mark Shelley and otter documentary distributor Mark Urman from New York.
Burnett's wife Mel and baby Sebastian left early for Sebastian's 6pm bedtime. Jason's mom, Nancy, was there, too. Jason gave dried apricots from his grandfather's orchard to Schlosser and Carmel Belle owners Jay and Chloe Dolata, and Nancy whispered, "They're not organic."
Jason pulled a Barack Obama, and opened by talking about growing lettuce, arugula, and kale on his small rooftop garden.
"I think Carmel is really uniquely positioned to embrace the food movement, in particular the local food movement," he said.
When asked by an audience member for a concrete step toward developing a food culture, Burnett talked about the exact idea you asked about: open-air food gigs, blocking off different streets and having restaurant seating out in the street, bringing residents into town for meals.
"It encourages the sort of mingling that really helps build a community," he said.

He said the city has done a remarkable job maintaining its character unlike other Western towns that have "a lack of vision and a lack of a long-term view of how to respect and preserve a place." His little stump speech for Jason as mayor was that he's about intelligent growth.
"He is not a luddite," Schlosser said. "He is not about preventing growth."
Food, he suggested, is the next soulful endeavor for Carmel to get behind: "Sadly, this is not a writer/artist community anymore. But Monterey County produces $4 billion of food a year....Right now, there isn't that strong a food culture here."
He talked a bit about Napa overselling itself, and how Monterey County is better because we grow healthy food for people to eat, not alcohol.
The food: pulled pork sandwiches on decadently buttery sweet rolls; mini open-face tuna melts with hook-and-line-caught tuna from Dave's in Santa Cruz and tomato slices from Nagamine Farms in Watsonville; goat cheese crostini, topped with slices of Nagamine tomato; and as more of a dessert item, baguette with slices of apple, East of Edam Schoch cheese, and a candied walnut.

London Calling: Friends
Maybe the friendship lasted through the years, a lifetime, maybe it lasted a summer.
Sometimes you'd really make an effort to keep in touch (letters, phone calls, cards on special occasions).?
Mostly though apart from a handful of really special relationships friendships had a lifespan.?
The other thing, apart from pen-pals (and sometimes these form lasting friendships - but usually only if you met up) you always had met your friends.
Welcome to the 21st Century. You never need lose touch with anybody ever again. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and the rest... friends are everywhere. And not just people you've know for years and met IRL (as they used to say back in the babyhood of the internet; that's In Real Life). I have some great friends on Twitter and Facebook who I've never met. Many of these I know? because we share something in common; things as diverse as the part of London we live in, to a love of cats, to an obsession with a sports team, to being diagnosed with a debilitating illness.
I've not known these friends as long as my school friends, or friends I met through work or at University (or indeed my family) and our connections may not be as deep. They are no less friends though.
This was brought home to me over Christmas when one of my Twitter friends vanished. A great tweeter and I didn't hear from her for over a month. I was worried... like me she has an auto-immune disease and as far as my imagination was concerned anything could have happened.
Unlike Facebook and LinkedIn where people go by their full names on Twitter you just have a handle and don't even have to give your real name (I don't). This means my friend was lost to me.?
Happily she resurfaced, she hadn't been well (as suspected). These on-line friendships form communities though... and whilst looking for my lost friend I bumped into another concerned friend of hers and so I made a new friend.
Maybe not everyone views on-line friendships like this? Ask anyone, I'm addicted to Twitter (and less so Facebook).
It has to be said though, the increasing (and instant) inter-connectedness of seemingly just about everything fascinates me very much.

?The first person I had to convince was me, and think, ?Okay, even if everybody thinks it is undoable, I am going to try because I really want to do it?,? stated French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius who began developing The Artist (2011) about eight years ago. ?When I started to think about what this silent film would be, I had two possibilities; either pure entertainment, a spy film in the vein of Spies [1928] by Fritz Lang which inspired Herg? to create Tintin or a film dealing with more serious issues, probably involving more work. This was more appealing to me because as a result we would move away from OSS [his previous two movies were espionage spoofs involving a clueless French secret agent codenamed OSS 117]. I wanted to work with Jean [Dujardin] again but didn?t want to end up doing the same things. I didn?t want this project to be perceived as a whim, or a gimmick, so I started looking for a story that could fit into this format.? Other factors needed to be taken into consideration for Hazanavicius. ?My main concern was not to be too complex with the story because if it gets too complicated you need words. What was liberating was that it didn?t have to be realistic. It?s in black-and-white, its period, and people are moving their lips but you?re not hearing them. This is not realistic so you can play with other things that in normal movies might be considered ridiculous, too symbolic or clich?d.?
?I decided to work on a story of a silent movie actor, which [would] make things easier for the audience, because it makes sense to watch a silent movie when the story is about a silent movie actor,? revealed Michel Hazanavicius who read a lot of biographies on the actors and directors from the cinematic era to help provide him with a ?springboard to the imagination.? ?I watched a hundred silent movies; the ones that aged the best were melodramas and romances,? commented the writer-director. ?It was always about the story rather than the character. In terms of research, I knew [Charlie] Chaplin and [Buster] Keaton, but the discovery was seeing silent cinema, dramas like Sunrise [1927] and The Crowd [1928], which were more minimal and had a real purity of performance. Valentin [Jean Dujardin] is based on Douglas Fairbanks, who was very happy in his own skin and content to make the same pantomime movie again and again. It was good to know there was another silent acting style to help build a bridge to modern audiences.? The key was to find the right cast. ?My starting point, linked with the desire to work once more with Jean [Dujardin] and B?r?nice [Bejo], was: a silent movie actor who doesn?t want to hear anything about the talkies. I circled around this character but as soon as I got the idea of this young starlet and the crossed destinies, everything fell into place and made sense, even the themes pride, fame, [and] vanity. I wrote the script very quickly, it took me like four months, which is very short for me. I knew that I could shoot every sequence with no dialogue, so at the end of the writing, I said, ?Okay, I think I can do it.?? Hazanavicius confessed, ?My [original] title was Peppy and George. It was nice and old fashioned, but a little too simple.? He adds, ?To do a silent movie, you have to have more expressive actors. John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and B?r?nice Bejo are very expressive, and when they talk, you can feel what it?s about.? French actor Jean Dujardin reflected, ?It?s quite pretentious isn?t it? The notion the audience is going to be interested in you for an hour and a half. Think too much about that and anxiety takes over. I?m happiest on set because I?m not myself. I?m someone else.? Dujardin relied on his costumes and the shooting locations to help him with his cinematic performance. ?I lived with a slick black haircut which was really short in the neck and a little thin moustache; that and spending time in those big houses in the Hollywood Hills got me into the skin of this actor.? Bejo agreed with her co-star. ?For us as actors, and even for the director, it gave us a sense of authenticity to what we were doing because we were talking about Hollywood and we were in Hollywood.?
?After my previous movies, I met some producers, and felt that they were scared a little bit,? recalled Michel Hazanavicius. ?Then I met Thomas Langmann, who was the right person; I could see in his eyes that he was hooked, and really wanted to see that movie. When I met John Goodman, he said to me, ?I?ve never seen this movie. That?s why I want to do it.?? Goodman remarked, ?I was intrigued, and then after the meeting I was more than willing to jump on because it was different. And what the hell, I didn?t have to learn lines. ?I?m your boy. Sign me up.?? The American actor enjoyed his role in the picture. ?The older I get, the more I appreciate what came before. I?m fascinated by these guys who started everything. I just read a biography of Cecil B. DeMille. He was a two-bit starving actor who couldn?t make it; he just happened to know some people. He directed some things. They were going to Flagstaff, Arizona. It was raining so they wound up here.? In regards to his canine companion, Jean Dujardin stated, ?There was a lot of improvisation with Uggie, like when I put the dog on the table or sometimes I follow him [or] sometimes he follows me. I had a lot of treats in my pocket. We worked with Omar [Von Muller], the dog trainer.? B?r?nice Bejo embraced the creative challenge imposed upon her. ?I like it very much when acting is not conveyed solely through dialogue but by the body, the walk, the attitude, [and] the precision of each gesture.? Bejo received assistance from her filmmaker husband. ?Michel always knew which music to play. For the scene where I get off the bus and arrive at the studio for an audition I think he played Day for Night. It?s so cheerful that I was immediately transported. It gave me wings!?
?I worked with the same composer for twelve years now,? stated Michael Hazanavicius when referring to his collaboration with Ludovic Bource. ?He?s my friend. But we almost killed ourselves for this one. Here, the music is the right hand of the image. The images and the music tell the story together.? A different technique was utilized by the filmmaker. ?I was very precise. Like, ?When he puts the butter here, and he looks at her, and the music has to start here.? Or for example, when he puts the fire on the film stock, the composer started the music when the fire began, but I said, ?No, no, put the fire when he gets the idea.?? Cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman did not use old cameras during the principle photography. ?There?s a guy at Panavision who?s a technical geek about those kinds of movies,? remarked Hazanavicius, ?and he did some alteration of the lens for us which gave us some distortion in the image. I used it, for example, when the lead actor contemplates suicide the shot of the gun and of the dog, there?s a small distortion.? Not all of the modern conveniences were employed. ?It?s not so much about the technical aspects. It?s more about the way you conceive things. I didn?t use a Steadicam, for example, because a Steadicam shot doesn?t make sense to me in a period movie. For the crane shot, it was a very modern crane and it goes farther.? The footage was converted afterwards. ?I used colour film after a lot of tests. We always say black-and-white, but actually it's about the greys. To have all the nuances of grey and to be able to play with it, we shot in colour, and then in post we went to black-and-white.?
?When we were doing the preparation of the movie, we didn?t have all the money so we were looking for all the solutions possible, and 3D was one option,? revealed Michael Hazanavicius who contemplated the idea for about two weeks. ?I thought it could be great. I imagined it as a very special image, a very new image, but fortunately, I didn?t have to do it.? Made on a budget of $15 million The Artist has earned $61 million worldwide. ?My job was to make the movie. That?s what I did. I know what we did in France was to have the maximum screenings just to let people talk about the movie and say they enjoyed the movie.? Hazanavicius observed, ?You can?t remake films exactly the way they were made 90 years ago. Audiences have been exposed to so much; they are sharper, quicker and a lot smarter. It?s exciting to stimulate them. The films I like the most are when the directors wander around and dare to make what they want while respecting the genre throughout.? The silent movie has become an awards circuit sensation receiving 10 Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Supporting Actress (B?r?nice Bejo), Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, and Best Original Score; at the BAFTAs the awards list was replicated along with additional nominations for Best Make Up & Hair, and Best Sound. The Golden Globes were equally enamored lauding the 1920s tale with Best Picture ? Comedy or Musical, Best Actor ? Comedy or Musical (Dujardin), and Best Original Score while also handing out nominations for Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Bejo), and Best Screenplay. ?This is a period movie, made now,? stated the French filmmaker who contended for the Palme d?Or at the Cannes Film Festival while his leading man won for Best Actor. ?The way I wrote this movie, I tried to respect the spirit. I tried to respect the melodrama, the structure, even the Hays Code, in the way that there is no kiss. It?s a very sweet romance. It?s very old fashioned.?

Fried food risks: Toxic aldehydes detected in reheated oil
ScienceDaily (Feb. 22, 2012) ? Researchers from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU, Spain) have been the first to discover the presence of certain aldehydes in food, which are believed to be related to some neurodegenerative diseases and some types of cancer. These toxic compounds can be found in some oils, such as sunflower oil, when heated at a suitable temperature for frying.
"It was known that at frying temperature, oil releases aldehydes that pollute the atmosphere and can be inhaled, so we decided to research into whether these remain in the oil after they are heated, and they do" Mar?a Dolores Guill?n, a lecturer in the Pharmacy and Food Technology Department at the UPV, said.
The researcher is a co-author of a project that confirms the simultaneous presence of various toxic aldehydes from the 'oxygenated ?, ?-unsaturated group' such as 4-hydroxy-[E]-2nonenal. Furthermore, two have been traced in foods for the first time (4-oxo-[E]-2-decenal and 4-oxo-[E]-2-undecenal).
Until now these substances had only been seen in bio-medical studies, where their presence in organisms is linked to different types of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
The toxic aldehydes are a result of degradation of the fatty acids in oil, and although some are volatile, others remain after frying. That is why than be found in cooked food. As they are very reactive compounds they can react with proteins, hormones and enzymes in the organism and impede its correct functioning.
The research, which is published in the Food Chemistry journal, involved heating three types of oil (olive, sunflower and flaxseeds) in an industrial deep fryer at 190 ?C. This was carried out for 40 hours (8 hours a day) in the first two, and 20 hours for the linseed oil. The latter is not normally used for cooking in the west, but it has been chosen due to its high content in omega 3 groups.
More toxic aldehydes in sunflower oil
After applying gas chromatography/mass spectrometry techniques, the results show that sunflower and linseed oil (especially the first) are the ones that create the most toxic aldehydes in less time. These oils are high in polyunsaturated fats (linoleic and linolenic).
Adversely, olive oil, which has a higher concentration of monounsaturated fats (such as oleic), generate these harmful compounds in a smaller amount and later.
In previous studies, the same researchers found that in oils subjected to frying temperatures, other toxic substances, alkyl benzenes (aromatic hydrocarbons) were found. They concluded that of the oils studied, olive oil is the one that creates the least.
The dose makes the poison
"It is not intended to alarm the population, but this data is what it is, and it should be taken into account" Guill?n highlights, who points out the need to continue researching to establish clear limits regarding the risk of these compounds. "On some occasions the dose makes the poison" the researcher reminds us.
Spanish regulations that control the quality of heated fats and oils establish a maximum value of 25% for polar components (degradation products coming from frying). Nonetheless, according to the new study, before some of the oils analysed reach this limit, they already have a "significant concentration" of toxic aldehyde.
The study counts all the aldehydes (not the just the harmful ones) that are generated during frying. Furthermore, the authors present a model that allows the prediction of how any hypothetical oil will evolve in the same conditions, if they know its initial fatty acid composition.

MEP CALLS FOR EXTENSION OF GAMES INDUSTRY TAX BREAKS
SNP MEP Ian Hudghton has made a plea to the European Commission to extend tax relief for the games industry, describing as ?alarming? recent reports that temporary concessions granted in 2007 are about to end.? Mr Hudghton?s call comes in the wake of TIGA?s recent bid to have tax breaks for the industry included in the UK Government?s forthcoming Budget.
?
Without these concessions, the MEP argues, games companies are liable to shift production out of the EU to countries such as Canada and South Korea with the loss of high quality jobs. Although Scotland does not currently have the benefit of these tax allowances, those involved in the industry, with the support of the Scottish Government, are continuing to fight for it to be implemented here.
?
The MEP, who shares an office in Dundee with Joe FitzPatrick MSP, Chair of the Scottish Parliament?s Cross Party Group on Video Games Technology, has written to Wouter Pieke of the European Commission?s Competition Directorate-General appealing for the current tax breaks to be extended past their 2012 deadline to give Scotland a chance to benefit from the competitive advantage they afford.

Writing to Mr Pieke, Mr Hudghton said:
?I have been alarmed by recent reports that the European Commission is considering halting tax relief on the games industry in the EU. This would have a devastating impact on the many companies which have been established here in Scotland and which are providing high quality jobs at a time of severe economic challenges.
?
?Although Scotland does not currently benefit from these tax breaks, the games industry with the support of the Scottish Government is currently arguing the case for Westminster to introduce tax relief to ensure that this industry can compete in the global market.
?
?Whilst I appreciate that the initial tax breaks were introduced on a temporary basis, experience shows that, without these incentives, companies will simply take their production elsewhere, out of the EU to Canada, South Korea and so on.
?
?
?I?m sure you will agree with me that we should be doing all we can during these tough financial times to ensure that the EU remains competitive in the global games industry market.? Removal of the current tax relief on the games industry in the EU would be a step in the wrong direction and I would urge you to consider the consequences this would have not just on the companies which are based in my constituency but in the wider EU context.?

?The Westminster government?s failure to intervene and create a level playing field for our firms shows a complete lack of imagination.

?TIGA?s proposed Games Tax Relief would more than pay for itself. Over five years, it is estimated that a relatively modest ?96 million tax relief would help to generate almost ?200 million investment in the sector and ?172 million in new and protected tax receipts to HM Treasury. In addition, it would secure almost 5,000 jobs.

?The Chancellor repeatedly stresses the need to support export-oriented, highly skilled, low carbon businesses, yet when the time comes to put his money where his mouth is he falls far short of his rhetoric.
?
?With growth in the economy floundering, the Chancellor needs to take decisive action in his forthcoming budget to support growth in this sector. Responsibility for doing so falls squarely on his shoulders, as only he has the necessary tax powers to do so.?

The inaugural meeting of the Cross Party Group on Video Games Technology at the Scottish Parliament will take place on Thursday 8th March 2012 at 5.30pm in Committee Room 5. The Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth has confirmed that he will be in attendance. The group is open to all those with an interest in the industry, particularly policymakers, developers as well as those involved in education and training.
