Clinton blasts Russia for supporting Syrian regime

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton bluntly warned Russia on Thursday that its support for Syria's Bashar al-Assad could help trigger a "catastrophic" civil war in Syria that risks spilling across the Middle East with devastating consequences.

"My argument to the Russians is ? they keep telling me they don't want to see a civil war, and I have been telling them their policy is going to help contribute to a civil war," Clinton said in an interview with Denmark's TV2 during a visit to Copenhagen.

Russia ? along with China ? has blocked U.N. Security Council support for an Arab League plan to end Assad's bloody 15-month crackdown on opposition to his regime. The United Nations estimates that some 13,000 have died in the violence.

"The Russians keep telling us they want to do everything they can to avoid a civil war because they believe that the violence would be catastrophic," Clinton said at a press conference with Danish Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal.

"They are just vociferous in their claim that they are providing a stabilizing influence.? I reject that.? I think they are, in effect, propping up the regime at a time when we should be working on a political transition," the top American diplomat charged.

Clinton's remarks could foreshadow a combative tone for President Barack Obama's planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Mexico June 18-19.

In Washington, U.S. officials pressed Moscow to halt any military shipments to Assad's government."We believe that all countries should cease any and all military assistance with Assad's regime and we've repeatedly expressed those concerns with Russian officials both publicly, as I'm doing now, and privately," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters Thursday.

The sharp escalation in Washington's pressure on Moscow to help end the bloodbath in Syria came as the White House accused Iran of "malignant behavior" by supporting the government in Damascus.

Obama's press secretary, Jay Carney, warned that time was running short for a peaceful, negotiated transition that eases Assad from power.

"The longer this goes on, the longer that Assad and his thugs are allowed to brutally murder the Syrian people, the more likely it becomes a sectarian civil war; the more likely that it spills over Syrian borders; the more likely that it transforms into a proxy war with different players, including, of course, Iran, which is already engaging in malignant behavior with regards to the Syrian situation, stepping up that kind of activity," he told reporters.

News of fresh atrocities like the reported massacre of civilians in Houla "horrifies" Obama but also "bolsters his resolve" to find a way to end the violence in Syria, Carney said.

"The brutality exhibited by Assad will surely doom him in history as a tyrant and a human rights violator and the worst kind of leader imaginable for any people," the spokesman said.

At the same time, "there is no question that as mighty as the United States is, that we cannot end all atrocities around the globe," Carney said.

Washington has said it will not provide arms to Syria's rebels but has effectively given the green light for other countries ? notably Gulf nations ? to do so.

At the same time, America and its allies have sought to sift through the Syrian opposition to determine who its key leaders are and where their allegiances lie. On Thursday, Carney seemed to vouch for the majority of the rebels, saying only "fringe" elements were aligned with Islamist extremists.

"We recognize and have said that there are elements to the Syrian opposition that do not share the democratic ideals of the broad Syrian people, who are not necessarily friends of the United States," he said.

"Those elements appear to us to be fringe elements. They do not represent the opposition as a whole. But we need to be mindful of that," Carney said.

"We believe that those who support al Qaeda or al Qaeda in Iraq and other elements are fringe elements of the opposition; that the broad opposition aspires to meet the democratic desires of the Syrian people," he said.

Toner emphasized the communication the U.S. has engaged in with Assad's opponents in Syria. "We've been working all along with the Syrian opposition, trying to improve their cohesiveness, trying to help them come together more as a cohesive body," Toner said.?"We have seen progress."

"There's still a ways to go here, but we need to foster the Syrian opposition so that when this transition does come there is an adequate, functioning opposition to help shepherd this change," he said.

Clinton, in Copenhagen, played down the prospects of an imminent breakthrough deal among Washington and other world powers.

"We're nowhere near putting together any kind of coalition other than to alleviate the suffering," she said.

"We have to peel away the regime's continued support within Syria while bolstering our assistance to the opposition and by isolating the regime diplomatically and economically," she said.

Global Strategies: Board of Higher Ed failing to provide costs oversight

5 29 12 023editedThe Board of Higher Education meets Friday, 6/1/12, in Portland. On the agenda are tuition increases and selection of funding priorities for the 2013-15 budget (which get submitted to next year?s legislature). In looking over the online materials (here), three conclusions are clear: (1) The Board is not providing oversight of the costs of public higher educations in Oregon. (2) The Board has no clear strategy for the survival for public higher education in Oregon or for the current institutions that provide it. And (3) the Board does not even acknowledge that the two megatrends of globalization and digitalization are reshaping businesses, including higher education, around the world.

First, the Board is not providing oversight of costs of public higher educations in Oregon. On page 2 of Appendix A (here), it states:

Finally, costs must be better managed at our institutions, and more efficient delivery models must be added to the program mix to get the maximum return for every dollar invested.

However, there is no evidence that this is being done. Neither Appendix A nor Appendix B (tuition increases) have any discussion of the cost drivers of higher education in Oregon and how they are being managed. Faculty salary increases are controversial (here) but not discussed. Presumably, health care and retirement (PERS) costs are increasing, yet neither they nor their management are discussed. ?In the context of proposing tuition increases, there is no alternative consideration of possible cost cuts (apart from reducing some student health care costs and fees).

5 29 12 018edited
Appendix A has two related charts on the ?Average Instructional Costs Per FTE Students? which shows that such cost between 1996 and 2011 increase by 44% compared to Portland Consumer Price Index increasing by 44% during the same period. Higher ed cost increases being just a Cash 2reassuring 2% more during this period. I?m skeptical. No further information is provided on costs. Just those two charts. ?That is not enough.

Second, the Board has no clear strategy for the survival of public higher education in Oregon. They seem to be dreaming that someday state government will provide them with more funding. I don?t think it will. They seem to think the 40-40-20 goals and accompanying educational reform efforts will eventually help with such funding. I don?t think so. Public funding, as it becomes available, will go to pre-k and K-12 education where the priorities are. The Board is not dealing with these, to me, realities.

I blogged about UC Berkeley Economics Professor Brad DeLong?s comment (here):

Chancellors can no longer rely on the legislature of California to fund Berkeley at the level Online ed 4needed to keep it an exceptional university. Berkeley needs another and a different strategy.

The strategy that Berkeley has settled on is to seek to produce the funding stream necessary to maintain a great University by becoming a finishing school for the superrich of Asia.

The Oregon University System and the Board of Higher Education have no such survival strategy.

Third, public higher education in Oregon needs to adapt as well as survive (and probably needs to adapt to survive). The Board is failing to adapt Oregon higher education to the two megatrends of globalization and digitalization. The Board has had no task force, committee, or even a report on the issues and challenges that online education brings. ?Nor has the Board done anything to strengthen foreign language, study abroad, or other international programs. The Academic recent turned down a proposal for

The Board is just not in synch with the big changes happening in the world.

Apple announces keynote event for June 11

9 hrs.

Apple just confirmed that?its keynote event?will take?place on Monday, June 11,?during?the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).?As usual, expectations are high ? the event potentially?brings a new product?announcement?or two.

The keynote will take place at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET on June 11. Apple typically kicks WWDC off with such an event, so no one's surprised by its appearance on the WWDC schedule. Instead, the focus is on whether or not a new product will be announced when?Apple CEO Tim Cook steps onto a stage in San Francisco, California two weeks from now.

As I've explained when I reviewed what we can expect to hear from Apple, both at WWDC and for the rest of the year, the Cupertino-based company is prone to releasing major iOS updates during the summer.?And besides, WWDC ??as its name implies ??is a global crossroads for Mac and iOS developers, and generally focuses on software, rather than hardware. So, if I were placing?bets on what will be announced at WWDC 2012, I'd put my big money on iOS 6.

Of course ??with the exception of the iPhone 4S ??every new iPhone model hit the?shelves in either June or July. This pattern has many believing that the next-generation Apple smartphone will be announced during WWDC.?Unfortunately for those hopeful folks,?most recent reports shoot down the idea?that the next iPhone will make an appearance on that day.

If you want to read more about this?? and other Apple-themed?? speculation, I suggest heading over to our recent rumor round-up. And once you're done with that, hit the comments and tell us what you think Apple's keynote event?will bring.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Therapies for Autism - TheHealthCast.com

Doubt Cast on Usefulness of ?Sensory? Therapies for Autism

Experts say proof is lacking for these techniques in other disorders, too

MONDAY, May 28 (HealthDay News) ? Sensory therapies using brushes, swings and other play equipment are increasingly used by occupational therapists to treat children with developmental issues such as autism, but a large pediatricians organization says there isn?t much evidence that such therapies actually work.

Still, the group isn?t completely discounting the potential of sensory therapies ? it?s a ripe area for research, it noted.

But before parents spend the time and money on taking children to sensory therapy, they should know that, as of now, the techniques are largely unproven.

?It?s OK for parents to try these types of therapies, but there is little research backing up the effectiveness of these therapies and whether or not they improve long-term outcomes for kids with developmental disabilities,? said Dr. Michelle Zimmer, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children?s Hospital Medical Center.

Zimmer is the co-author of a new American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement on what is often referred to as ?sensory integration therapy.? The policy statement appears online May 28 and in the June print issue of Pediatrics.

According to the pediatrician group, ?sensory processing disorder? should not be used as a standalone diagnosis.

No one disputes that children with conditions such as autism can have abnormalities in their responses to sensory stimuli, including sight, taste, touch and sound. For example, autistic children may have aversions to loud noises, to certain food textures or to being touched unexpectedly, Zimmer said.

But that doesn?t necessarily mean the problem is with their brain pathways for processing sensory information, as the term ?sensory processing disorder? implies.

Instead, some other issue could underlie their reactions to stimuli, such as a behavioral issue, said Dr. Susan Hyman, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics subcommittee on autism and an associate professor of pediatrics at University of Rochester Medical Center, in Rochester, N.Y.

Instead of chalking up various aversions or compulsions to sensory processing disorder, health care providers need to consider what other developmental issues may be going on with the child, such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and so on, Zimmer said.

?There has never been a study that has shown that a child can have just sensory processing disorder, isolated from another developmental disabilities, such as autism or ADHD,? Zimmer said.

Sensory integration therapy got its start in the 1970s, when an occupational therapist described a theory for how a well-organized sensory system develops. Children, the therapist postulated, gradually learn to make use of information from a variety of sources at the same time in order to understand the world. The theory is that sensory dysfunction occurs when these systems don?t develop correctly.

In sensory integration therapy, occupational therapists put children on a ?sensory diet,? exposing them to different sights, smells, sounds and sensations, to improve the brain?s ability to process the information.

For now, however, whether it works remains a theory, Zimmer said.

Zimmer noted that occupational therapists in her hospital?s autism center uses sensory therapies, and anecdotally, she?s seen sensory therapy appear to help some children.

?We are happy to support parents who want to try to these therapies, but we also need to use caution in making sure that the use of these therapies is improving some outcome for their child,? Zimmer said.

In the absence of controlled clinical trials testing whether sensory therapies work, parents have to try to be objective, ask themselves tough questions about whether the treatment is really working, set specific goals and determine if the child is moving toward the target.

?Is it improving the child?s ability to function? That?s where more research needs to happen,? Zimmer said.

Hyman, who studies sensory differences in children with autism, agreed. ?The scientific testing of this intervention has not demonstrated that it is effective for all children as a standalone treatment,? she said. ?However, for individual children, it may be an important part of a total therapy package.?

Pediatricians should counsel families about the information out there on sensory therapies, she added.

?You don?t want to spend a lot of time money and energy on a treatment if it?s not right for them. They have to be prudent,? Hyman said. ?In the absence of data, parents have to utilize the information that?s available to them in making choices.?

Female Concussions on the Rise in Soccer. ? Tutor System ...

?

Lynn Taylor of the Rapid City Journal staff?in?Rapid City, South Dakota on May 26, 2012 comments?about?an astounding 173,285 brain injuries that are reported annually in the U.S. related to sports or recreation in children from birth to 19 years of age according to?the CDC.

Agencies like the Rapid City Concussion Project are helping by publishing information about the signs of concussions such as:

? appearing dazed or stunned

? confused about assignment or position

? forgetting an instruction

? unsure of game, score, or opponent

? moving clumsily

? answering questions slowly

? losing consciousness (even for a few minutes)

? showing mood, behavior, or personality changes

? inability to recall events prior to or after the?injury

Although most people think of boys or men when sports injuries occur ?new research shows that female soccer players are the second most injury prone group ?to football players in the number of concussions suffered. The research also shows that female athletes suffer greater side effects than males and that they last longer than in males.

?

These new research results indicate that people should think differently now and not consider the injury irrelevant according to Dr. Christopher Dietrich of the Rehab Doctors in Rapid City.

A greater emphasis ?now prevails on education to prevent brain concussions. There are new projects for parents and coaches with information about the injury and computerized concussion assessment measurements. Comparisons can be made before and after concussions. These tests ?help players and coaches decide how safe it is for the athlete to play and/or to return to the game after an injury. An?American Journal of Sports Medicine study recently published showed that younger and female athletes take longer to recover and have longer term side effects (headaches, sensitivity to light, depression) than males.

?

Dr.Dietrich ?believes that younger athletes ?face greater risks because their brains are still in the developing stage. In females estrogen levels and a greater blood flow to the brain than males may be the cause of this phenomenon.

The neck muscles of girls are not as strong as those of males so when ?the ball is ?hit with the head in the game of soccer this may also be a ? cause of concussions. However most concussions occur from body to body contact. The size of the player and the intensity with which the game is played also have to be considered.

When brain concussions, unfortunately, lead to immobility of a limb one of the best physical therapy solutions is through the use of the TUTOR system. The HANDTUTOR is a comfortable ergonomic glove that connects to a computerized ?set of challenging games which provide intensive exercises when there is a disability in the hand, arm or elbow. The ARMTUTOR is a brace that can help achieve success in limb rehabilitation in upper limb injuries. The LEGTUTOR ?likewise supports injury therapy for ankles, feet and other ?lower limbs. The 3DTUTOR is a wireless motion feedback device that can be positioned on discrete joints of the head, trunk or upper and lower extremities. This allows for the evaluation and treatment of choice. The 3DTUTOR is used alone or in conjunction with the other TUTORs to exercise additional interjoint coordination movements.

Currently in use in leading U.S. and European hospitals, clinics and rehabilitation centers the TUTOR system is available for children as young as 4 or 5 as well as for adults. The TUTORs can also be used through telerehabiliation when the patient is discharged from the hospital or lives too far from a physical therapy facility. The TUTORs are fully certified by the FDA and CE. See WWW.MEDITOUCH.CO.IL for more information.

Obama on the defensive on spending, debt

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Government spending and debt are emerging as a campaign tug-of-war, with Mitt Romney blaming President Barack Obama for a "prairie fire of debt" and Obama calling the charge a "cowpie of distortion." House Speaker John Boehner is talking about a debt ceiling that is still more than eight months away.

What gives? In a word, polling.

The American public is growing increasingly distressed about government spending and high budgets. The issue now ranks as high on the worry scale as lack of jobs. And it worked well for Republicans in 2010, who galvanized voters with ads and flyers that drew attention to government red ink and took back control of the U.S. House after four years of Democratic rule.

Republicans are looking for that magic again.

Romney has maintained a drumbeat of criticism over Obama's handling of federal spending and the national debt in recent weeks, forcing the president on the defensive on an issue where public opinion is stacked against him.

In Iowa earlier this month, Romney said a "prairie fire of debt" was sweeping across the nation, threatening the country's future. He accused Obama of inflating the debt that he had pledged to reduce and ballooning the federal budget deficit with the 2009 economic stimulus and 2010 health care bill after saying he would cut it sharply.

Obama, in campaign events in Colorado, California and Iowa this week, argued that federal spending had slowed to rates not seen in decades after he inherited a $1 trillion large debt and later pushed for $2 trillion in spending cuts. The president pointed to Romney's tax proposal, saying it would give millionaires tax cuts at the expense of the debt.

Obama called Romney's claims a "cowpie of distortion" and would saddle the debt with $5 trillion in new tax cuts, likening it to trying to put out "a prairie fire with some gasoline."

"What happens is, the Republicans run up the tab, and then we're sitting there and they've left the restaurant," Obama said at a campaign event in Des Moines. "And then they point and (say), 'Why did you order all those steaks and martinis?'"

Obama's defensive crouch on debt and spending reflect a hard reality: Polls consistently show voters, including sought-after independents, placing more trust in Romney to handle the massive debt. The nation's economy remains a focal point for voters but many remain concerned that years of heavy federal spending on guns and butter could leave the U.S. in a similar position as Greece and other European nations grappling with massive debt.

A Gallup/USA Today poll conducted May 10-13 found that overall, 82 percent of Americans called the "federal budget deficit and debt" extremely or very important, a level of interest comparable to unemployment. The same poll found Romney with a broad advantage on handling the budget deficit and debt, with 54 percent saying he would do a better job handling it compared with 39 percent who chose Obama.

The results mirrored an April Washington Post/ABC News poll, which found 51 percent of Americans sided with Romney on handling the federal budget deficit, compared with 38 percent for Obama. Among independents, 60 percent preferred Romney while 29 percent thought Obama would do a better job handling it.

The White House has tried to respond. Traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., White House press secretary Jay Carney cited an analysis by MarketWatch that said spending under Obama had grown more slowly than any president since Dwight Eisenhower.

A few hours later, Obama picked up on the piece, telling donors in Denver that his work to pay down the federal debt in a "balanced and responsible" way was "starting to appear in places ? real liberal outlets like the Wall Street Journal ? since I've been president, federal spending has risen at the lowest pace in nearly 60 years." MarketWatch is published by Dow Jones & Co., which also publishes the Wall Street Journal.

Yet, Obama's budget stewardship is open to interpretation. The debt now stands at $15.7 trillion, compared to $10.6 trillion on his inauguration day. On a dollar basis, that's the biggest ever jump in the debt. How much the debt has grown can also be measures as a percentage of what he inherited. By that measure, the debt has increased by half during the three-and-a-half year Obama administration. During President Ronald Reagan's eight-year administration, the debt nearly tripled, from about $910 billion to more than $2.6 trillion.

Still, much of the increase during Obama's tenure has been a consequence of the recession. In a poor economy, government spending increases automatically because more Americans become eligible for food stamps, unemployment assistance and Medicaid. Also, a poor economy leads to unemployment which cuts into tax revenue. As a result, deficits are inevitable as more money goes out and less comes in.

To be sure, Obama pushed through a stimulus package that cost more than $800 billion and he and President George Bush both approved spending of the $700 billion bank bailout in 2008 and 2009. But those costs are not recurrent.

"It's important to understand the reason why the debt went up by so much," said Robert Bixby of the budget watchdog group The Concord Coalition. "We certainly do have a very serious long-term debt problem in the country. We have an underlying structural imbalance between what we are promising, mostly in entitlement benefits, and what we're willing to pay for in taxes. But in the short-term there are a lot of factors that are pushing the debt up that aren't related to fiscal policy."

Add to the mix Boehner, who has said when Congress is asked to raise the nation's borrowing cap after the election, he will insist on spending cuts to offset the increase. Democratic leaders call it an irresponsible course of action, noting that the gridlock over the debt ceiling last year caused a downgrading of the U.S. government's credit rating.

All of this is aimed at unaligned, independent voters.

In turning attention to debt, Republicans are tapping a winning issue they deployed in congressional races two years ago. In October of 2010, Republican pollster Wes Anderson said, congressional campaigns shifted "away from jobs and economy to government taking us over the cliff." The emphasis proved to be a success at the ballot box.

These days, the economy remains the preeminent issue in voters' minds, but Anderson says middle-of-the-road votes are the targets of the big government message.

"The middle is angry about where we are at and they really see two villains on this stage, this play has two antagonists. Both of them are big," said Anderson, who is working on congressional and statewide political campaigns in several states that are presidential battlegrounds. "One is big business, big Wall Street, big insurance, big oil, just big, abusing the middle class, abusing small businesses, abusing the taxpayer. The other is big government ? big government wildly running up massive deficits and debt which abuse the taxpayer, the middle class and small business."

Independent voters, he said, "hold both of those central tenets to be true."

Pirates blank Cubs for 10th straight loss

updated 10:10 p.m. ET May 25, 2012

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pedro Alvarez is in the Pittsburgh Pirates lineup every day because of his bat.

Turns out, the third baseman's feet - not to mention his glove - work too.

Alvarez scored on an unconventional slide in the second inning for the game's only run and turned in a couple of defensive gems to help the Pirates to a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night.

"I try to be ready every time on defense and anticipate the ball being hit to me," Alvarez said. "Like I've said before, I take a lot of pride in my defense."

A.J. Burnett and four relievers sent the listless Cubs to their 10th straight loss by surviving on a night the Pirates allowed 10 hits and ran into trouble in just about every inning.

Burnett (3-2) gave up six hits, struck out six and walked two over 5 1-3 innings and the National League's best bullpen made it stand up as Pittsburgh extended Chicago starter Ryan Dempster's misery. Joel Hanrahan worked out of a two-on, one out jam in the ninth for his 11th save.

Dempster (0-3) remains winless since last August, surrendering one run and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking one while dropping his ERA to 2.14.

Still, it wasn't enough to keep the Cubs from posting their first 10-game losing streak since dropping the first 14 games of the 1997 season.

Chicago left 11 runners on base and went 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position. Pittsburgh wasn't much better but only needed Rod Barajas' RBI-single that scored Alvarez to beat the floundering Cubs.

"It's unbelievable," Chicago manager Dale Sveum said. "We out-hit the opponent every night and can't score. We can't seem to get that hit with men in scoring position."

The Cubs started the season 13-11 but have sunk to the bottom of the NL Central thanks to an offense that has stopped producing. They have scored just four runs in their last 56 innings.

"I'm a little lost for words now," Sveum said. "It's kind of the same thing. But guys are battling, having decent, good at-bats - just not finalizing it, really. A lot of good at-bats, just not getting it done."

Chicago had plenty of chances, putting at least one runner in scoring position in all but two innings, but Burnett relied on his slider and his defense to wiggle free on a night where he labored to get through Chicago's struggling lineup.

Burnett needed 105 pitches to get 16 outs and took advantage of some nifty glovework by Alvarez, who saved at least one run in the fifth by making a diving stab of a sharp grounder by Joe Mather then firing to first to end the inning as the Cubs came up empty with runners on second and third.

"The defense was big," Burnett said. "They saved a couple of them and I was able to find my hook for a batter or two."

Chicago threatened again an inning later only to run itself out of a two-on, one-out situation when Alfonso Soriano crashed into Alvarez trying to move from second to third on a groundball by Darwin Barney. Soriano was called out due to runners' interference and reliever Jared Hughes got Koyle Hill to ground meekly to second to end the threat.

The Cubs ran out of chances once the Pirates got to their bullpen, which leads the National League in ERA. Jason Grilli struck out the side in the seventh, Juan Cruz picked off Chicago's Tony Campana at second base to cut short a rally in the eighth before Hanrahan took over in the ninth.

Chicago put runners on the corners with one out on singles by Barney and pinch-hitter Reed Johnson but Hanrahan struck out David DeJesus and Starlin Castro to end it.

"Runners on the corners, you're thinking `How you going to get out of it?"' Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "(Hanrahan) showed you how to get out, you get ahead and throw strikes."

The loss was more of the same for Dempster, who hasn't won in a stretch of 17 starts. He's been among the best pitchers in the NL this season, but has been undone by a lack of run support.

The Cubs have scored just 16 runs in Dempster's eight starts this season.

"It's hard for us - 10 games in a row is not a lot of fun," Dempster said. "It doesn't make coming to the ballpark fun, it doesn't make going out there and playing fun. We've just got to fight through it."

NOTES: Pittsburgh RF Josh Harrison went 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games ... Chicago reliever Carlos Marmol could be activated off the DL on Monday. Marmol hasn't pitched since May 11 due to a strained right hamstring ... Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens will start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday as he continues to rehab from a right shoulder inflammation ... The series continues Saturday, with Chicago's Paul Maholm (4-3, 4.73 ERA) facing Pittsburgh's Kevin Correia (1-5, 4.50). Maholm spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Pirates before signing with the Cubs during the offseason.

Chris Skordahl, an account executive with KAISERComm has this to say about Avaya IP Office, ?We can typically find enough cost savings from eliminating conference calling costs, the expense of additional lines for faxes or at remote sites, on top of better mobile collaboration that our customers typically upgrade to Avaya IP Office with no additional operational expenses and no capital outlay.? We have many customers who actually lease or finance their Avaya IP Office system and the monthly savings from upgrading to IP Office is greater that their monthly invoice.?

A major reason why Avaya IP Office is able to be so competitive on value is its ability to scale from 2 to 384 users. (AP) ? The man accused of murdering 6-year-old Etan Patz underwent a psychological examination as he awaited arraignment Friday, exactly 33 years after the boy vanished without a trace in one of New York City's most traumatic missing-child cases.

After decades of dead-end leads and false hopes among investigators, Pedro Hernandez, a former convenience-store stock clerk, was arrested Thursday in the 1979 slaying.

Etan disappeared on a two-block walk to his school bus stop in Manhattan in a case that helped give rise to the national movement to publicize and find missing and abducted children. The boy was one of the first missing children to appear on a milk carton.

Hernandez, who was 18 at the time, told investigators this week that he lured the little boy into the shop with the promise of a soda, then led him to the basement, choked him to death and put his body in a bag with some trash about a block away. Authorities never found a body.

Hernandez, now 51 and living in Maple Shade, N.J., was scheduled to appear in court for the first time later Friday ? a date now recognized as National Missing Children's Day.

The first court proceedings were set to unfold even as investigators were still working to corroborate what they said was an emotional, surprise confession by Hernandez, who emerged as a suspect in the decades-old case just days ago.

Police said Hernandez was taken to a secure wing at Bellevue Hospital early Friday to get medication for an existing health problem. While he was there, psychologists questioned him about his mental state, then cleared him to return to a regular holding area.

Police would not disclose the existing condition.

His court-appointed lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, had no comment as he arrived at the courthouse, saying he hadn't met with his client yet.

He asked reporters to be respectful of some of Hernandez's relatives assembled at the courthouse, including his wife, daughter and another man, who huddled together on a wooden bench, turning away interview requests for more than an hour.

"It's a tough day. The family is upset. Please give them some space," Fishbein said.

Crime-scene investigators arrived Friday morning at the building in Manhattan's fashionable SoHo section that once held the bodega where Hernandez worked.

People who lived in the neighborhood in the late 1970s described the place as a neighborhood institution, and one of the few places to buy groceries in a part of the city that was then grimy, industrial and only just emerging as a haven for artists.

Former Soho resident Roberto Monticello, a filmmaker who was a teenager when Patz disappeared, said he remembered Hernandez as civil but reserved and "pent-up."

"You always got the sense that if you crossed him really bad, he would hurt you," Monticello said, although he added that he never saw him hit anyone.

Monticello said Hernandez was also one of the few teenagers in the neighborhood who didn't join in the all-out search for Etan, which consumed SoHo and the city for months.

"He was always around, but he never helped. He never participated," Monticello said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday that investigators had yet to determine any motive for the slaying, but authorities said they have a detailed, signed confession, as well as accounts of incriminating remarks Hernandez made to others.

Etan disappeared on May 25, 1979, after his parents, Stan and Julie Patz, allowed him to walk to his school bus stop for the first time. The stop was adjacent to the bodega. The boy never made it onto the bus.

Hernandez wasn't initially questioned like other workers at the bodega and moved to New Jersey not long after the killing, Kelly said.

But the commissioner said Hernandez had told a relative and others, as far back as 1981, that he had "done something bad" and killed a child in New York City.

He emerged as a suspect after a tipster contacted police, following news reports about a fruitless search for the boy's remains last month in a basement near the Patz home.

Pusha T Has Become 'A Student' Of The-Dream

'I've learned so much about song structure from The-Dream,' G.O.O.D. Music MC tells MTV News from his studio.

Pusha T is laser-focused on his debut album at the moment, trying to craft a cohesive musical project. But if you thought the G.O.O.D. Music signee would hole up in the studio with his boss, Kanye West, think again.

Over the weekend, MTV News caught up with Pusha in Atlanta, where he was in the studio working closely with The-Dream. The two first linked up when producer Rico Love sent one of Push's tracks to Dream for a feature and eventually collaborated on a few more things. In addition to lending his vocals to the album, The-Dream has been guiding Pusha through the recording process, helping him take his work to a new level.

"It really started with this beat [from] Rico. We were like, 'Yo, Dream would just sound amazing on the record, period.' So we sent it out and it came back so quick. Dream was like, 'Man this is one of the ones,' " Pusha recalled. "Personally, I never thought the record was going to come back that quickly. I was in New Orleans somewhere and Rico was like, 'Aye! Dream did it — he on the phone!" I thought, "OK, wait a minute this might really be something."

Pusha wouldn't reveal exactly how many tracks the two had banked together, but he explained why the R&B singer/producer is the perfect fit for this album.

"Musicality, to me in general, is missing, but [Dream] is a musician, he's a fundamentalist. I've really taken on the student role," Pusha continued. "I feel like I'm in with the best of the best. You've got Dream on one end, you've got Kanye on another end, and you can learn so much. I really look at myself as just a rapper's rapper, but I've learned so much about song structure from Dream.

'This is the most I've ever rewritten," he added. "I wrote the 'Automatic' record, sent it to Dream, and he was like, 'Aye, you rapping too damn much,' and I'm like, 'OK.' How [would you not] listen to the writer of everything? How [would you not] listen to the producer of everything?"

The-Dream was just as enthusiastic about working with Pusha on the album. "I always personally felt like he was one of the best at what he did, period," Dream said. [There's] lots of guys that are great from a rap standpoint, but in songs they're not as great. Sometimes [you need to say], 'Hey, move this part here and this is your hook,' or 'Let's write about this, or let's tap that emotion and let's not rap past the emotion of where it is.' "

For the producer, who has banked countless hits for stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé, it all comes down to focus on proper songwriting and structure. "Compare it to great people, whether it's the B.I.G., whether it's Tupac," Dream explained. "I remember in '96, when 'All Eyez on Me' dropped, I wanted to see the credits, and I seen DeVante [Swing's] name — I seen this R&B guy do it. If you really notice, R&B guys actually did always make the best rap records."

Luckily for Pusha, he's got the R&B maestro on his side.

"It's a lot of pressure now, I think, for Pusha to do exactly what I knew he was gonna do, which is write a song," Dream said. "Like write it as a song, not as, 'I have to battle you guys. I'm going to say the hottest line next.' "

Pusha's album is sure to make a splash when it finally drops. On Wednesday (May 23), he released the Rico Love-produced "Exodus 23:1," which seemed to take some subliminal shots at YMCMB. Lil Wayne tweeted one simple message after hearing the song: "F--- pusha t and anybody that love em."

Are you excited to hear what Pusha T's album will sound like? Tell us in the comments!

Microsoft pulling free development tools for Windows 8 desktop apps, only lets you ride the Metro for free

Windows 8 desktop on Qualcomm tablet

Microsoft has instituted a big change with its free Visual Studio 11 Express suite that's leaving some current- and soon-to-be Windows 8 developers up in arms: it's pulling support for creating anything but Metro-native apps. After 11 becomes the norm, desktop developers will need to either cling to Visual Studio 2010 for dear life or fork over the $500 for Visual Studio 11 Professional. Programmers won't have the option of backdoor coding, either, with both the compiler and toolchain being pulled from Windows' framework. The situation doesn't represent the end of the world for some developers -- more established pros don't balk at a $500 price, and third-party tools will likely live on -- but it sets a much higher price of entry for desktop apps developed through the official route, especially if you want to write games using XNA. We've reached out to Microsoft for a response, but for now we'd suggest setting aside five Benjamins if Start screen tiles and app charms aren't your cups of tea.

DNA on beer can needle 'likely' belongs to Clemens

(AP) ? A needle stored with a beer can appeared to contain an extremely tiny amount of Roger Clemens' DNA, which turned out to be good news and bad news for both sides in the perjury trial of the seven-time Cy Young Award winner.

A forensic scientist on Friday linked Clemens to cotton balls and a syringe needle saved from an alleged steroids injection 11 years ago. His testimony, laced with statistics and probabilities, was one of the last pieces of the government's case in its effort to prove that the pitcher lied to Congress in 2008 when he denied using performance-enhancing substances.

Under cross-examination, Clemens' lawyer tried to poke holes in the physical evidence. He got the expert to acknowledge there were "hundreds of thousands" of white males in the United States who could be a match for the scant amount of DNA found on the needle, and that it's "conceivable" the cotton balls could have been contaminated by beer and saliva.

Prosecutors had hoped to wrap up their case heading into the long holiday weekend as the trial reached the end of its sixth week, but the DNA expert's testimony took much longer than expected. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton then ended the session a half-hour early when one of the jurors learned that her mother had died.

The judge said he doesn't expect the juror, a woman who works in law enforcement with the local public transportation authority, to return. Two jurors have previously been dismissed for sleeping, and another departure would leave only one alternate in a trial expected to last at least two more weeks.

The government's key witness, longtime Clemens strength coach Brian McNamee, says he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and with human growth hormone in 2000. He said he kept the needle and other waste from a 2001 injection and stored it in and around a beer can in a FedEx box in his home for more than six years before turning it over to federal investigators.

Alan Keel of Forensic Science Associates told jurors that the DNA found on two cotton balls was "unique to one person who has ever lived on the planet" ? Clemens. He said that one of the cotton balls had a random match possibility of one in 15.4 trillion for Clemens' DNA, and the other was one in 173 trillion, when compared to the population of white people in the U.S.

But the needle was not as conclusive. Keel was able to detect only six to 12 cells for testing when he examined it. A drop of blood, by comparison, contains up to 30,000 cells.

The match: one in 449 for Clemens.

"That means that Mr. Clemens is the likely source of that biology," Keel said.

Knowing that the defense would attempt to undermine the integrity of the evidence, prosecutor Courtney Saleski asked: "Is there any way to fake this?"

"No," said Keel, shaking his head. "If this were contrived, I would expect to obtain much more biological material."

In other words, it would have been extremely difficult for anyone, including McNamee, to purposely contaminate the needle because it contained such a minute amount of human residue.

During cross-examination, Clemens lawyer Michael Attanasio attacked the findings in several ways. He pointed out that Keel was being paid by the government. He pointed out that Keel didn't test all of the items available. He pointed out that the DNA had degraded over time. He noted that 449 was a "far, far smaller number" than the other numbers in the trillions, and it therefore can't be said with uncontested certainty that the DNA on the needle belongs to Clemens.

Attanasio got Keel to agree that the Clemens blood found on one cotton ball appeared to be from the aftermath of an injection, but that the Clemens puss on the other cotton ball "is not from an immediate injection site." The lawyer also suggested the blood on the cotton ball might not have come from an injection at all: "Is it not at all uncommon for a pitcher to have a little blood blister at the end of his finger when he was pitching?"

Attanasio further implied that residue beer and saliva inside the can could have soaked the cotton balls. Keel said that was "conceivable" and "not implausible," but he added that the appearance of the cotton balls would have reflected the contamination.

"You would have a big, diffuse mess," Keel said.

Saleski picked up on that point in her follow-up questioning.

"Did you see any evidence that these cotton balls were exposed to a bunch of beer?" she asked the witness.

"Not really, no," Keel said.

Keel also re-emphasized his opinion that the minute sample of DNA on the needle could not have been manipulated or put there "by design."

"It would be virtually impossible," Keel said.

The needle naturally caught the attention of the jurors, who submitted multiple questions for the judge to ask the witness about the one-in-449 ratio.

"There's the rub," said Keel as he explained again that the results were compatible with Clemens ? but couldn't be considered a conclusive match.

Clemens' lawyers have maintained all along that a beer can is no way to store evidence. During the questioning of Keel, the government decided to emphasize that point, too, inferring that if McNamee had truly intended to keep the needle and cotton balls with the intention of implicating Clemens, he would have found a more sterile place for it. McNamee has said he kept the evidence to placate his wife, who was concerned he would take the fall if his involvement in performance-enhancing drugs ever came to light, and that he had no plans to make it public.

Keel also found a gauze pad and tissue that matched McNamee's DNA to an even greater probability than the Clemens matches. McNamee has said he would sometimes accidently cut himself while opening small glass containers of steroids before injecting Clemens.

The gauze pad match was 1 in 1.8 quintillion people for white Americans.

A quintillion has 18 zeroes in it.
