The senior NATO admiral, James Stavridis, had a bogus account attached to his name on Facebook, resulting in several military officers and defence officials accepting so-called friend requests.
The Sunday Telegraph in the UK has reported that while some information was shared on Facebook, it was unclassified.
There has been some suggestion that military officers were told that evidence was pointing to an involvement by China.
However NATO officials have not publicly said who was behind the attack but have confirmed other attempts to set up fake allied commander pages.
During the week, the newspaper reported fears in US defence quarters of espionage operations by Chinese intelligence agencies, in which secrets of stealth aircraft, submarine technology, the space program and solar energy had been tracked.
Officials from NATO have said they would not want to ban Facbook pages as social media played a crucial role in the recent Libya campaign.
