Hong Kong reporter upsets Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit with Tiananmen question

HONG KONG - A Hong Kong reporter briefly threw Chinese President Hu Jintao's tightly scripted visit to the semiautonomous city off course Saturday by asking about the 1989 military crackdown on protesters in Tiananmen Square.

The reporter for the Apple Daily newspaper said he was detained for about 15 minutes after the incident by three to four security officers, who told him he was too noisy and had broken rules. Other reporters also shouted questions to Hu, but they weren't detained.

Hu was touring a new cruise ship terminal when the reporter shouted out a question to him from behind a security cordon.

"President Hu, have you heard that Hong Kong people hope to reverse the verdict of June 4?" the reporter, Hon Yiu-ting, asked. "Have you heard?"

Many in Hong Kong have long called for Beijing to overturn its condemnation of the weeks-long 1989 pro-democracy protests that the military crushed on the night of June 3-4, killing hundreds, possibly thousands. On mainland China, dissidents, intellectuals, relatives of the victims and even ordinary citizens also have called for a reassessment of the incident, though their voices are usually muffed because of government censorship.

Hu did not respond to the reporter's question and it's not clear whether he even heard it. The encounter was shown on local television.

Saturday's incident was one small flaw in a carefully orchestrated visit by Hu that underscores the widening tensions between Hong Kong and its mainland rulers 15 years after the end of British rule. Hu is on a three-day visit to the southern Chinese financial hub to mark the handover's anniversary on Sunday.

While the visit is aimed at emphasizing strengthening ties and coincides with a raft of measures to boost Hong Kong's economy with the mainland's help, stark differences remain. Hong Kongers have grown increasingly uneasy about life under Beijing's rule and the mainland's growing influence on the territory.

Under Hong Kong's mini-constitution, the city is guaranteed until 2047 a high degree of autonomy and Western-style civil liberties not seen on the mainland, such as freedom of speech.

Hu's visit is also intended as a sign of support for Hong Kong's incoming leader, known as the chief executive. Pro-democracy protesters are planning to rally Sunday outside the venue where Hu will oversee Leung Chun-ying's inauguration, but heavy security means it's unlikely he'll see them.

BROOKLinterns give a round of ?A-paws? to the Salty Dog ...

Friday, June 29, 2012

In the world of Brooklynfans.com, Tuesday nights have been deemed BROOKLinterns Night Out. It?s the night we choose to review some of our favorite hot spots, as well as getting to experience some new things as well. A few weeks ago you saw us take on Williamsburg?s Viva Toro. This week we paid Bay Ridge?s Salty Dog a visit.

Salty Dog is well known in the Bay Ridge area for its unique ambiance. This Bar and Grill is located in an old firehouse. Firemen memorabilia coated the walls with a true sense of pride and accomplishment. Every picture and every detail told a story, it was almost a historical homage. There is also an old fire truck in the front of the restaurant when you first enter.

The atmosphere was very relaxing, it was one in which we were able to just sit, talk and enjoy our food. There were many flat screen TV?s upon the walls, as the latest Yankee game played in the distance. And by many, we mean 8 huge TV?s in the restaurant and 8 huge TV?s at the bar.

Talk about "GRANDE" Nachos!

The music wasn?t too loud either, and when paired with the slightly dim (but not too dim) lighting, a very calm, mellow?environment was created. They played the latest radio hits, which catered to everyone. This was a pleasure to dine in. Although the front is a Bar, the back is a restaurant, which makes it suitable for family dinners as well. We had the cutest baby girl from the table near us to keep us entertained as she paced around the place like she owned it. It wasn?t too crowded but it wasn?t totally empty on a Tuesday night which was perfect. The service was great, as each waiter was very polite and extremely attentive. But then again who doesn?t love the BROOKLinterns?

Salty Dog has a pretty extensive menu and it wasn?t easy picking an entree. From salads, to pastas, to sandwiches, we were REALLY indecisive. The pricing was very fair; not expensive at all, which nowadays is hard to find.

Our appetizers included Potato Skins with cheese, bacon, and sour cream; they were heavenly and huge! And Grande Nachos which incase you didn?t get the description?from the ?Grande? had all the works; Tortillas covered in melted cheese, black olives,?diced tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, guacamole, sour cream and salsa. Both were gone?within 5 minutes so that oughta tell you something!

That's a hearty load of pasta!

Michelle?s Dish (and no drinks-just water tonight folks!)

After much debate over what to choose, I finally decided on the Linguine with Grilled Chicken in a pesto tomato cream sauce. For starters, the large portion sizes paired with the low prices are rare in itself. My pasta dish was delicious. It was the perfect blend of spices; the pesto gave it that extra something that really complimented the entire meal. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the chicken had amazing flavor. And the fresh tomato garnish was a delicate touch. The whole presentation of the dish looked beautiful and it tasted even better!?

Maria?s Dish

It tastes better than it looks.. and it looks pretty darn good!

After being indecisive for a while, the nice waiter helped me choose. For dinner, I got the Chicken Francaise. This came with two sides, fantastic garlic mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. Among the veggies were zucchini, yellow squash, cauliflower, carrots, and my all time favorite, broccoli. After the giant appetizers, it was hard to try and finish the plate. And like the appetizers, the Chicken Francaise was humongous. The two hearty chicken breasts were covered in a tasty lemon and garlic sauce. After finishing half of my plate, I felt like I was going to explode. This was one of the best plates of Chicken Francaise that I have ever had. I would definitely recommend it. I also tried guacamole for the first time ever! It was really really good, and I?ve been craving it ever since!

The Salty Dog is located at 7509 3rd Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11209. It is a few blocks from the R train, the B63 stops right across the street, and the B4 is right around the block.

As usual we BROOKLinterns had a very nice night. It was one that was more mellow and relaxing than most. But it was very much needed after the past hectic week. We enjoyed great food, fun conversation, and good company. Maybe we even exchanged some inside jokes; maybe not guess you?ll never know! ;) Stay tuned for more BROOKLinterns Reviews?Next Stop Coney Island? Any Suggestions? Post on our BROOKLinterns Facebook Page and mention us on our twitter! @BROOKLinterns

Huge 4th of July parade still source of Wakefield pride

While America celebrates its 236th anniversary this Fourth of July, many families across the country will gather with their friends and neighbors to host their annual barbeque in anticipation of fireworks lighting up the night sky. However, for most Wakefield residents, the annual Fourth of July parade will be the main focus of the day.

?Many people in Wakefield schedule their barbeques around the parade; they don?t miss it,? said Cindy Schatz, chairman of business appeals for the Wakefield Independence Day Committee.

The parade, which is Massachusetts?s largest Fourth of July parade, the second largest in New England and the eighth largest in the country, was first organized more than 60 years ago and has since become a source of immense pride in Wakefield. With an expected crowd of 60,000 people lining the streets, the event draws people back year after year.

As chairman of business appeals for the committee, Schatz?s main goal is to raise the estimated $55,000 it takes to put on the parade each year.

?The carnival at the Galvin each spring brings in some money, but it all depends on the number of tickets sold and if it rains or is cold, we don?t earn as much,? Schatz said.

Due to the uncertainty of parade funds coming from the carnival, Schatz and the committee turn to businesses and residents to help with funds.

?We have the ?Give 5 for the 4th,? where we ask individuals to donate $5 with the idea that, if every individual in town donated $5, we could pay for the parade just through these donations,? Schatz said.

The Committee also aims to get local businesses to donate money and in turn, their business?s name is displayed on a banner carried along the entire 1.9 miles of the parade.

?A lot of the businesses that donate are those with owners who are longtime residents and have a special connection to Wakefield and the parade,? Schatz said.

Christopher J. Barrett Realtors is just one of these longtime donor businesses.

?All my children grew up in Wakefield, and we have always enjoyed the parade and want to make sure that it continues,? said Marilyn J. Barrett, the owner of Barrett Realtors. ?It?s a really fun day with the parade, the fireworks and the downtown is just chockfull of activities.?

Having donated for the past four years, Breton Electric will again be supporting the parade this year.

?Steve and I grew up in Wakefield and we love the parade; it?s wonderful for the town and we want to give back to the community since so much of the community sees the parade,? Wendy Dennis said, referring to herself and her husband, who own Breton Electric.

?We?ve always enjoyed the marching bands and now that we live behind the Civic Center, where the bands perform, we can enjoy them from the comforts of home,? she said.

These bands include drum corps groups made up of 18-to-23-year-olds who travel all over the country to compete throughout the summer. The bands stop and perform at the Americal Civic Center and are given reviews from judges.

?We bring in five or so each year and they are all spectacular,? Schatz said of the bands.

So far, there will be 10 floats in the parade this year, made by groups such as the Girl Scouts, the Beebe Library and the Wakefield Repertory Theatre. The floats are judged and prizes are given to the winners.

?Floats may reflect the theme of this year?s parade, ?Celebrate America? or they can come up with their own idea,? Schatz said.

Parade onlookers can also look forward to the appearance of antique vehicles, active military groups, high school bands, clowns, 4-H groups, parade horses and Wakefield sports teams.

The parade will begin at 5 p.m., starting on North Avenue, in front of the Lakeside Office Park, and continue to Main Street, ending at the Americal Civic Center.

As in years past, chairs will surely line the street this 4th of July, as people claim their spots on the parade route. With the support of 700 individuals and families and more than 70 businesses, the parade committee will once again be able to carry on Wakefield?s tradition, which would surely make the likes of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Hancock proud.

Sony selling chemical unit for $730 million

TOKYO: Sony said Thursday it would sell its chemical products division for about $730 million as part of a giant overhaul of the struggling Japanese consumer electronics giant.

Sony previously said the Development Bank of Japan was buying the business, which makes films used in liquid-crystal display panels and other products.

But it did not disclose the deal's price tag at the time, which it said on Thursday was 58 billion yen ($730 million).

The sale is scheduled to be completed later this year pending regulatory approval, the firms said in a statement.

"The new company... intends to rapidly introduce products that meet customers' needs by utilizing its network of manufacturing and sales bases in Japan and overseas, and increasing cost competitiveness," the statement said.

Announcing the deal in March, Sony said its chemicals arm, which has about 3,000 employees in Japan, the United States, Europe and China, did not fit into a corporate overhaul that includes a management shakeup and the buyout of its Sony Ericsson mobile phone venture.

The Japanese entertainment giant plans to cut 10,000 jobs and spend nearly $1.0 billion on a revamp that its new chief Kazuo Hirai described as "urgent".

The firm has vowed a return to the black after losing 456.66 billion yen in the year to March, forecasting a net profit of 30 billion yen in the current fiscal year through March 2013.

Sony has struggled with losses in its TV business as competition intensifies and profit margins shrink, while piracy threatened its music and film assets.

It was also hurt by last year's quake-tsunami disaster and a strong yen which hurts the competitiveness of Japan's exporters.

Business Critical Applications: Virtualizing SAP?it's a risk not to

There are business-critical applications?and then there?s SAP.? If you?re an IT manager in an SAP-based organization, you know first-hand the importance of this market-leading BCA system to every aspect of your operations.? Many large enterprises cannot run their businesses without SAP?it?s not just critical, it?s indispensable.

Is Virtualizing SAP Risky?

In years past, some IT managers were reluctant to virtualize SAP, and for good reasons.? The story is very different today, in part because of the increased emphasis on IT as a strategic function. A case in point is Hoya Corporation, a Tokyo-based manufacturer of optical products. Needing to respond more quickly to changes in the global marketplace, Hoya decided to become more agile in every aspect of its operations, including its SAP environment. ?Therefore, in November 2010, the company migrated its entire production SAP environment[1] to a private cloud based on VMware vSphere.

Hoya has been reaping the benefits ever since.? SAP operating costs have been cut by 75 percent. ?Peak workloads?for example, running consolidated financial reports?are handled much more effectively, thanks to streamlined provisioning.? The increased flexibility has allow the company to integrate several acquisitions with minimal disruption to ongoing operations. ?And Hoya is leveraging its virtualized SAP environment to add additional capabilities in the near future: enhanced disaster recovery/business continuity and a chargeback system for cost transparency.

Organizations Benefit from Virtualizing SAP

The pressure to ensure high availability is intense for SAP managers?even a few minutes of downtime can unleash a barrage of angry phone calls from frustrated users.? VMware virtualization takes advantage of SAP?s high-availability features to ensure that the software stays running?and the phones stay quiet.

Upgrades are a fact of life for every SAP landscape and they can be complex and time-consuming. Often they take hours or days in a non-virtualized platform?if you have the hardware available. In a virtual environment, new virtual machines can be provisioned in minutes, and then deprovisioned rapidly, recovering the resources. ???

As IT budgets continue to shrink, the imperative to lower operating costs gets more urgent?and virtualization can make a real difference. ?Server consolidation translates directly into lower costs for power, cooling, and space?and boosts the organizations ?green? profile in the bargain.

Timing the Move

Let?s say that you?ve decided to virtualize your SAP environment?now the question is timing.? In the course of helping literally thousands of customers make the transition from physical to virtual VMware has identified some opportune times to move.

A planned SAP upgrade can be a good time.? For example, Mazda took advantage of a planned move to SAP NetWeaver Process Integration to virtualize their entire SAP production environment[2]?and cut in half their capital expenses.

When approaching a hardware refresh, many customers take advantage of the changeover to consider a migration to virtualization at the same time.? Many system integrators know how to integrate the refresh and virtualization projects to minimize disruptions and combine staff training for new hardware and software.

New compliance and security imperatives often require substantial infrastructure changes, which can highlight the inherent inflexibility of the existing platform and persuade top management to invest in infrastructure.? In the wake of a natural or man-made disaster that impacts operations, top executives often order a review of the company?s disaster recovery/business continuity plans, exposing vulnerabilities that can be best addressed with virtualization.

Google Play hits 600,000 apps, 20 billion total installs

Google during its I/O keynote hit a symbolic milestone: it now has 600,000 apps in the Google Play Store. As well, the store is clearly hitting a brisk pace in adoption, with 1.5 billion downloads every month and 20 billion since Android began. That stacks up fairly well to Apple's own claims, although not universally: it's just short of the App Store's 650,000 apps, but Apple can still point to 30 billion total downloads. Google also hasn't said how many apps are explicitly tablet-friendly versus 225,000 iPad-oriented apps. Either way, Google can say that it has largely erased the app quantity deficit, and that's no mean feat.

Overhaul planned for iTunes: report

2 hrs.

A major re-do for Apple's iTunes is reportedly in the works, one that would better integrate the iCloud file-storage service that the company started offering last year.

Users will be able to "more?seamlessly access and manage their music, videos and downloaded software apps across different Apple gadgets," according to Bloomberg, which cited "people with direct knowledge of the matter."

Apple is also planning new music-sharing features Bloomberg said. It would be the largest overhaul of iTunes since it launched in 2003 as a music store serving primarily the iPod.?

Msnbc.com asked Apple about the planned changes. A spokesman said the company said it was declining to "comment on rumor and speculation."

While iTunes is the largest music store worldwide, it faces increasing competition from Amazon.com and Walmart. Apple's offerings, of course, also include movies, TVs and books, as well as?the App Store for the iPhone and iPad. Amazon and Google, with its Google Play store, are fierce competitors there, too.

Google announced Wednesday that its store will now also offer movies and television shows for purchase, along with magazines.?

Screenwriter Nora Ephron Is 'Gravely Ill'

'When Harry Met Sally ... ' and 'Sleepless In Seattle' writer is not expected to survive the night, TMZ reports.
By Josh Wigler

Nora Ephron, the writer of iconic romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally ... " and "Sleepless in Seattle" among other hit films, is reportedly "gravely ill" and "not expected to make it through the night."

TMZ reports that family members are currently telling close friends of the writer/director "there is little hope that [Ephron] will recover from her current condition." The nature of her illness is not currently known, though it's been reported that Ephron is suffering from leukemia.

Word of Ephron's condition first hit the Internet on Tuesday (June 26) by way of an article published by journalist Liz Smith, a close friend of the legendary Hollywood screenwriter. In the column, Smith writes about Ephron as though she has already passed away, praising her friend's "grave" and "unexpected" humor.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Shortly after publication of Smith's column, Ephron's former close friend Margo Howard wrote on Twitter: "A very accomplished writer died. Nora Ephron, from cancer."

Ephron's publisher Knopf later told The New York Times that Ephron is "still alive," according to a tweet from Times writer Julie Bosman. Knopf rep Elizabeth Lindsay said as much in a statement to the Atlantic Wire: "It's pretty critical. She's not doing well, but she's certainly alive ... The report she has passed away is not correct."

Stay tuned to MTV News for further updates on Ephron's condition.

CAIRO (AP) ? President-elect Mohammed Morsi tried to ease the turmoil that has rocked Egypt since the uprising 16 months ago, reaching out Tuesday to Christians, women and secular revolutionaries to join his new Islamist-led government.

Even prominent opponents of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood gave cautious support for his effort to end military rule after the generals issued a series of last-minute decrees to try to keep their grip on power.

But it remained unclear how much power the military was willing to cede ? and how much authority the Brotherhood ultimately intends to retain for itself.

Dina Zakariya, a Morsi campaign spokeswoman, said the only way forward is to create a national unity government that represents all political forces and all Egyptians.

"The country lived for so long in corruption. No single party can take full responsibility" for tackling the nation's problems, she said, adding that Morsi is serious about appointing a Christian and a woman as vice presidents and including a range of political factions in the Cabinet.

Morsi was declared the winner Sunday of the first free presidential election in Egypt's modern history, becoming the first Islamist and the first civilian to hold the office. Since then, backdoor negotiations on a power-sharing agreement between Islamists and the ruling military council have been ongoing.

The deeply polarizing race pitted Morsi against Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq. Many liberals who drove the uprising, as well as women and minority Christians were despondent over the choice between a vestige of the old regime and a candidate they fear might impose stricter Islamic law in Egypt and limit personal freedoms.

In an effort to assuage those fears, Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood have floated the names of respected liberals, women and Christians to join his government. Among them is former nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei, a leading pro-democracy advocate.

Critics say the Muslim Brotherhood, which dominated in both parliamentary and presidential elections, is power hungry. They warn that if the Brotherhood does not create a broad-based government, it alone will be blamed for failing to fix the battered economy, surging crime and deteriorating social conditions in Egypt after a tumultuous transition to democratic rule.

"Morsi promised that the prime minister post will be assigned to an independent, not because the Brotherhood loves independents but because they fear failure," said Mohammed el-Gebbah, a former Brotherhood member. "The burden is too heavy and they want someone to carry it with them."

There are already disputes boiling between some revolutionary factions and the Brotherhood, with one prominent activist calling for a march to the presidential palace this week dubbed "Beer is our right" to protest any attempt by the new president to impose a religious state.

"We are happy to begin the path of getting rid of military fascism, but we also reject religious fascism," Ahmed el-Bahar wrote in a Facebook posting. "If we don't seize our rights and practice them now, we will slowly turn into the Brotherhood state."

On his second day at work at the presidential palace, Morsi invited protesters injured during the uprising and the families of those who were slain, and was photographed kissing their foreheads. He listened to their demands to hold retrials of old regime members implicated in the killings.

Mubarak and his interior minister were sentenced to life imprisonment for failing to stop the killings, while six of Mubarak's top police officials were acquitted on June 3, sparking angry demonstrations by many who fear Mubarak's verdict can be easily overturned on an appeal.

Morsi also received Egypt's top Coptic Christian official, Bishop Bakhamous, and promised "an open line" with Christians.

Media reports narrowed down names of possible candidates for prime minister.

At the top of the list were ElBaradei and economist Hazem el-Beblawi, a former deputy prime minister in the Cabinet formed after Mubarak's ouster, the Al-Akhbar state newspaper said. Morsi was also considering a leftist female political science professor and Christian lawmakers as vice presidents, it said.

Gamal Abdel-Gawad, a political analyst from Al-Ahram center for Political and Strategic Studies, said Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood were reaching out to liberals and others only to further their short-term goal of "getting rid of the generals." In the long run, they will push for a more Islamic state and sideline liberals, he said.

He said the Muslim Brotherhood will keep control of the ministries that serve its "ideological platform and vision," such as the ministries of justice, finance, and education.

As for the military, it will maintain its control over the key defense and interior ministries, El-Gebbah said.

The liberals and other political forces will fill the rest of the ministries. "If they succeed, it will be a success for the Brotherhood and if they fail, others share the failure," Abdel-Gawad said.

He added that ElBaradei would pose a risk for the Brotherhood "because he doesn't compromise and at any moment he can just quit and leave if he doesn't agree with what is happening."

The first front in Morsi's battle to wrest back power from the military will be his swearing in on Saturday. Traditionally, presidents take the oath of office at parliament, but the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated parliament was dissolved by the ruling military council. The alternative would be to take the oath before the Constitutional Court, which is packed with judges appointed in the Mubarak era.

The venue will be a signal to revolutionaries whether their new president is willing to defy the powerful generals.

The Brotherhood is also pressing for the reinstatement of the dissolved parliament. But they suffered a setback Tuesday when a court delayed ruling on an appeal to overturn the military council's order until after Morsi is sworn in on Saturday.

The Muslim Brotherhood and another Islamist group, the ultraconservative Salafis, won more than 70 percent of parliament in a free election earlier this year. The parliament, according to Egypt's interim constitution, is tasked with forming a panel to write the constitution. Twice, liberals walked away from panels formed by the Islamist-controlled parliament, voicing fears that Egypt's new constitution would end up more Islamic.

Two days before the June 16-17 presidential runoff, the ruling council dissolved parliament after a court determined the parliamentary elections were illegal. As polls closed on June 17, it issued constitutional amendments that gave the military rulers legislative powers and control over drafting the constitution.

According to his spokesman Yasser Ali, Morsi held consultation with top legal and constitutional experts, trying to find a way out.

Activists also set up a website titled "Morsi Meter" to monitor the president's performance during his first 100 days in office. The April 6 group, composed of young liberals who helped lead the uprising, is transforming itself from a protest movement a lobby group, said its spokeswoman Injy Hamdi, "as a guarantor that no new dictator rules Egypt."

"The time now is to help dismantle the old corrupt system not through street protests, but to offer a hand," she said. "We will be a lobby group, monitoring the performance of the president. If he deviates from the path, we will be the first to oppose him, and return to the street."

Screen Shot 2012-06-26 at 8.33.37 PMThey really are doing face-lifts younger and younger these days. It was just eight months ago in October 2011 when we first met Snip.it, a San Francisco-based startup that has created a web application for people to "snip," collect, and comment on, and share their favorite articles from all over the web. But for Snip.it, it's already high time for a makeover: Today the company is unveiling a top-to-bottom rebuild of its service with a faster, revamped user experience and a heaping handful of new features.

5 Ways You Can Help Fund Your Child's School Without Spending ...

Parenting

by Lamar Tyler ?|? on June 25th, 2012 ?|?

Schools across the country are severely underfunded. To add insult to injury, year after year budgets are being slashed even further and some school districts are even considering shortening the school year to compensate for financial woes. What if I told you that there was a way that you could help provide extra money to your child?s school without spending any extra money in the process? Would you be interested?

This process would not include hustling candles, frozen pizzas, magazine subscriptions or cookie dough to your coworkers. This process would not include walking your child from door to door while trying to escape stranger danger at every turn. This process would not have family and friends running in the opposite direction when they see you or ducking your phone calls.

What I?m talking about is the Box Tops For Education program (BTFE). Families across the country have been clipping box tops from products that they already buy and have in their cupboards and pantries. They turn the box tops into the schools and the schools turn them in for cold, hard cash. Up to 20 thousand dollars per school, per year. Last year the total amount paid out to schools by Box Tops For Education was in the neighborhood of 74 million dollars. I repeat 74 million dollars.

The sad part of this is that the program isn?t being used to it?s fullest potential in black communities and our schools often need this money the most. To make matters worse the schools in black communities who do participate normally do well so why don?t we take advantage of this program like we should?

For this very reason Ronnie and I have partnered with General Mills? Box Tops for Education program in an effort to spread the word in the black community. We are dedicated to ensuring that our children get their cut of that 74 million dollar pie.

Recently I attended the National Box Tops University in Minneapolis, Minnesota and was blown away by the event. Local coordinators representing schools from across the country came out pumped up and ready to learn how they can earn even more money for their schools. Imagine a huge convention center room flooded with people pumped up about equipping kids with what they need to learn.

During National Box Tops University, I listened to keynote speakers and had conversations with school coordinators from across the country. They graciously shared their tips on what worked best for them. Below is a list of five ways you can begin earning money for your local school in order to help them fill the gap.

1. Clip Box Tops:

Yes it?s that simple. Clip your box tops and find out when your school collects them so you can submit on time. If your school isn?t involved in the Box Tops For Education program you can register them on the BTFE website and become the school?s coordinator yourself. If you look in your home you?d be surprised how many box tops are waiting for you to clip them. For a complete listing of participating brands check the Box Tops website here: http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/clip/Brands.aspx

2. Run a Contest at Your School:

Once BTFE is up and running at your school, having a contest is a good way to generate buzz about the program. Some schools award individual students, some choose classrooms or some even choose entire grades. I heard from several successful coordinators who ran contests and they really offered a wide array of prizes. The prizes ranged from pizza parties for the winning classroom to dunking the principle in a dunking booth. The bottom line is don?t be afraid to get creative and don?t be afraid to just ask the students what they?d like.

3. Start a Competition: School vs. School:

You can also take the competition outside of your school. To get school spirit going and box tops coming in, try a friendly competition with another local school. The final goal is to see who can collect the most box tops but you?ll have plenty of fun in the process.

4. Go Shopping Online:

Did you know you can earn box tops digitally? If you shop at stores like Macys, Apple, Target or Kmart you can earn box tops for each purchase. Imagine if all of the parents at your school bought their items through the BTFE marketplace. How many additional eBoxTops would you earn? The best part is you don?t even have to count them and send them in. They?ll be deposited to your schools account automatically.

5. Spread the Word:

One of the easiest ways to earn extra money for your school is one of the oldest. Just spread the word. Let others in your community know that you?re collecting the box tops. One coordinator shared how after a feature in a local newspaper a woman dropped off a huge amount of box tops to the school. She had been collecting them but didn?t have a school to hand them over to until she saw the article. I spoke with another woman who said her grandmother saves all of her box tops in a coffee can and ships them to her twice a year to help the grand-babies. Just remember there are box tops in the homes of your family and friends just like they?re in your home so don?t forget to ask.

I hope this list proved helpful to you. In the upcoming months we?ll be providing more information on how you can take advantage of this awesome program to help fund our schools. We hope that you?ll join us in making a difference.

BMWK family are you already collecting box tops? Are you a coordinator? What works well for you and your school? If you don?t already will you begin now?

Rooney could be scapegoat for England's exit

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:37 a.m. ET June 26, 2012

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) -If England needs a scapegoat for the national football team's latest tournament exit, it seems that Wayne Rooney is the best option.

Sure, the Manchester United striker scored the only goal in England's 1-0 win over co-host Ukraine. Sure, that goal assured the team of first place in Group D, meaning England would avoid defending champion Spain in the quarterfinals. And sure, and maybe most interestingly, Rooney scored his penalty in the quarterfinal shootout loss, briefly giving his team a 2-1 lead over Italy following a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes.

Despite that, at least some were still not impressed - not with his overall effort nor with his pre-tournament vacation to Las Vegas.

"Where were Roo?" read the back page headline in the Daily Star on Tuesday.

The knocks on Rooney - some valid, some a bit of a stretch - stem from last year. That was when the team's biggest star kicked an opponent in a Euro 2012 qualifier, incurring a two-match ban that kept him out of the opening draw against France and the comeback victory over Sweden.

Because of the break between the end of the Premier League season on May 13 and the match against Ukraine on June 19, Rooney was probably lacking match fitness.

England coach Roy Hodgson, however, doesn't think so.

"In the first game he didn't show any particular signs of lacking any fitness and he played the 120 minutes (against Italy)," Hodgson said before then speaking directly to the British press. "I think what you might be saying is that you're a bit disappointed with his performance and maybe thought he could have played better."

Rooney scored 35 goals for Manchester United last season. And still only 26, he broke his eight-year goal-less drought at major tournaments in his first game in Ukraine, against Ukraine.

That's not enough to win a major title - something England hasn't done since the 1966 World Cup, when Rooney was still 19 years away from even being born. And it certainly wasn't enough to satisfy a country that expects to win every tournament it enters despite that record.

"In all top international teams, you're looking at one, two, possibly three individuals that everyone recognizes as being exceptional world-class talents," Hodgson said. "And when you get to the big stage, you're hoping those players perform and show they're world-class talents - the Maradonas that win Argentina a World Cup with his performance."

Instead of plaudits, Rooney now appears to be gaining a reputation as the star who fails to use his strength and pace to deliver when it really matters for England.

The criticism of his vacation to Las Vegas, where he was pictured clutching what appeared to be a bottle of beer in a casino, and the jokes about his transplant-bolstered hair will likely only make things harder on Rooney when the next World Cup comes around in two years.

"Of course I think we put a lot of expectations on him," Hodgson said. "When he missed the first two games we were all believing that what we need to do now get to the third game and Wayne Rooney will win us the championships. That maybe was too much to ask of him.

"He certainly tried very hard, but he didn't have his best game. I think he would admit that. That might be down to a number of factors."

Clever bSafe Panic Alarm App Launches In US With Free Offer To New Yorkers

bsafeThe market for 'panic alarm' apps on smartphones is littered with simple apps which just make a lot of noise if you get attacked but not much else. This is a mistake. Smartphones have cameras, microphones, and can broadcast their location - basically everything you need to turn the phone into the ultimate safety device. So it's surprising that so few startups are addressing this area. One that has been around since 2011 out of Denmark is PanicGuard. The app will do an alarm, SMS someone, starts recording video and tracks your location. But it's expensive ($6 a month), and is failing to scale outside the UK/Europe. It's main competitor is the Bsafe app on iOS and Android from the startup called Bipper. This has now launched a major push into the US with both a free and paid-for model, and a way of using it for more every-day safety. It's this business model which has seen it become the most downloaded mobile safety app in Europe to date, with over 100,000 downloads.

Muzak redivivus? Streaming subscription audio

By Jon Jermey

The following paragraphs are extracted from an article published in the June 2012 issue of Online Currents.*

THE FALL AND RISE OF MUZAK

In 1934 the Muzak Holdings company was established in the US to pipe soothing recorded music via cables into offices, department stores and other public places in many US cities. Seventy-eight years later, having staved off bankruptcy in 2009, Muzak Holdings is still with us, though its delivery methods have changed to embrace new technologies, and it now offers its clients a much broader range of ?channels?. Small wonder, then, that internet entrepreneurs have decided to take a leaf from its book and offer their clients what essentially amounts to the same service (though primped, polished and jazzed-up for the web) ? an endless stream of recorded music, matched to your specifications and delivered on demand.

?INTERNET RADIO

The more immediate roots of streaming audio lie in the internet radio movement. There are currently tens of thousands of internet ?radio? stations, accessible via the web, which broadcast not through the airwaves but over internet cables and connections. Some provide just one ?channel? of music, while others like SomaFM offer more than a dozen. Despite regular skirmishes with recording industry bodies over royalty fees and the potential for copyright infringement, internet radio has become a large industry. Internet radio stations are typically free for the user to access. Some are supported by advertising, others by donations, while public broadcasters, like the BBC in Britain and the ABC in Australia, typically maintain internet radio channels as adjuncts to their free-to-air broadcast activities.

?STREAMING SUBSCRIPTION AUDIO

The user of internet radio can choose from a vast range of channels, offering a huge variety of performers and types of music from baroque to heavy metal. From here it is a relatively small step to allowing users to select, in advance, the exact tracks they want to hear. This is the domain of streaming subscription audio. Originally offered almost as an afterthought by providers selling downloadable music tracks, the subscription audio model has grown to a level of size and sophistication which challenges the ownership model. Now there are many companies offering similar facilities, so prices are going down and the level of service ? and the number of tracks available ? has risen steadily over time. Audio streaming is the recording industry?s latest and best response to the threat of music piracy. Though relatively new in Australia, it is becoming big business in the US.

The basic model is simple: a provider acquires the necessary licences to offer a vast number of high-quality music tracks to its clients on a streaming basis, in return for a monthly or yearly fee: subscribers are permitted to play any track but not to retain the track on their system, so that when the subscription ends, so does their legal access to the music. Subscribers can search the provider?s database for music or performers, and select tracks they want to hear. These are ?queued? on the server and sent to the subscriber?s PC, usually via a web browser. Subscribers can play any track as often as they want to hear it, exactly as if they owned the music. Their choices are saved when they go offline, and they can log in from any other browser and access their music queue from there, though only one user can be logged in to a particular account at any time. Some providers extend the same functionality to mobile devices like mobile phones and Android tablets.

Because the service on offer is essentially the same from each provider, competition is mainly on price, the number of tracks available, and the range of mobile devices supported.
