Windows 8 Tablets Get Even Thinner Acer Iconia W510

Acer Iconia W510

Starting at $500 (without the keyboard dock), the Acer Iconia W510 is a Windows 8 tablet that's impressively light and thin: just 1.27 pounds and 0.35 inch thick. It's powered by Intel's latest Atom processor (letting it run older Windows desktop apps), and packs either 32 or 64GB of storage.

Among Windows 8 tablets, models such as Acer Iconia W510 want to have it both ways: They're full PCs, since they pack an Intel mobile processor, but they also have the lightweight form factor and power efficiency people expect from a tablet.

At least that's the theory -- so far no one has had an opportunity to test any of them yet.

Judging by the specs, the Iconia W510 does very well stacked up against its competitors that also run on Intel's 1.5GHz "Clover Trail" chip. It has 2GB of RAM and a 10.1-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 1,366 x 768 resolution. A layer of durable Gorilla Glass 2 protects the display.

The tablet has a pair of cameras -- an 8-megapixel one in back and a 2MP front-facing cam. Both can record video up in full HD.

You may have noticed the keyboard dock. Like most other Windows 8 tablets, the Iconia W510 can plug into a dock and morph into a more traditional laptop. The dock is an option and costs $150. It's not just a keyboard, either -- with the tablet docked, you'll double your battery life to 18 total hours. And it also folds over up to 295 degrees to become a stand for presentations or video playback.

Outside of the dock, however, the tablet's quite light, weighing just 1.27 pounds. It's also just 0.35 of an inch thin -- even thinner than Lenovo's Clover Trail tablet. Connectors include a microHDMI port for mirroring content to a TV and a micro USB port. The dock includes a full-size USB port.

We got a little hands-on time with the W510, but the model unfortunately wasn't a working unit. Still, we liked how light the device was, and the keyboard dock felt comfortable to type on. We could see getting work done on the tablet in laptop mode, though carrying it around folded up felt slightly awkward.

The Iconia W510 will be available Nov. 9 in 32 and 64GB versions for $499.99 and $599.99, respectively.

How do you like the Iconia W510 and Intel Atom-powered tablets in general? Think you'll buy one? Let us know in the comments.
